The UK’s best Black Friday SIM-only (no handset) deals

Thursday, November 23rd 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

You may or may not have heard, but it’s Black Friday tomorrow and that means mobile providers are offering SIM-only deals that are variously being described as ‘amazing’, ‘epic’ and ‘red hot’. Exciting, huh?

If you’re happy with your phone, getting a SIM-only deal can be liberating. You can often get more data for your money and you won’t find yourself tied into a lengthy two or three-year contract.

But which one to go for? There are loads about so in order to narrow it down you need to decide what’s important to you. Do you want shed loads of data? The cheapest deal you can find? Or is it the flexibility of a short, rolling contract that appeals? Either way, here’s our round-up of the best Black Friday SIM-only deals around right now.

Unlimited data for £20 a month

Three is offering a monster 100GB for £20 a month on a 12-month contract. This deal also includes unlimited minutes, unlimited texts and a 30GB personal hotspot, which means you can share your phone’s connection with another device such as an iPad.

We thought this would easily be the provider of choice for anyone looking for bucket loads of data, but then Virgin Mobile came along with the offer of unlimited data, unlimited minutes and unlimited texts – also for £20 a month on a 12-month contract.

Virgin says you also get its standard bonus features with deal including data rollover and data-free messaging on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter, not that either of these make sense in the context of an unlimited deal.

Obviously the Virgin deal stands out but Three’s is also worth considering as 100GB will be more than enough for most people.

What would you do with unlimited data? Lie in a hammock watching Netflix? Us too!

We’ll give giffgaff a mention here too, although the language it uses to describe its £20 SIM-only plan suggests it may not be quite as unlimited as Virgin’s offer.

To be fair this one isn’t even a Black Friday deal, it’s just a competitive price. giffgaff’s top SIM-only package offers what it calls ‘Always On’ data plus unlimited minutes and texts.

It explains that with Always On data, you get 9GB at full 4G speed but then after that you’ll be on a reduced speed and that data-intensive activities such as streaming in HD will be noticeably slower.

It’s also worth mentioning that giffgaff differs from the other two providers we’ve mentioned in that its SIM-only deals come on rolling monthly plans rather than 12-month contracts.

A flexible SIM-only plan for £4 a month

iD Mobile has some of the cheapest pay monthly SIM deals around – all on 30-day rolling contracts to give you maximum flexibility. Its cheapest plan is just £4 a month and gives you 500MB of data, 250 minutes and 5,000 texts.

If you only go online occasionally and don’t spend too long talking on the phone then this could be a great alternative to pay as you go, it also offers more data, minutes and texts than a number of £5 plans from other providers.

This isn’t even a Black Friday deal. It’s just really, really cheap.

12GB of data for £10 a month

Asda Mobile is offering 12GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts for £10 a month in what it is describing as a “promotional festive bundle” as it runs right the way through until 9 January and isn’t restricted to the Black Friday weekend.

Even with Black Friday in full swing, you could hand over a tenner to any other mobile provider and you won’t get anything like 12GB back in return.

Asda’s deal comes on a 30-day rolling contract so you still get to keep the freedom to leave if an outstanding handset deal comes along.
