Thousands more Hull residents get access to ultrafast fibre broadband

Tuesday, June 14th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

More than 4,500 homes in the east of Hull can now access ultrafast fibre broadband for the first time.

KCOM’s Lightstream service, which offers speeds of 100Mbps, has been rolled out to around 50 streets in the Holderness Road area of the city.

Residents in Holderness Road, Holland Street, Durham Street, Summergangs Road, Lee Street, Rosmead Street, Estcourt Street, Westcott Street and Newbridge Road, as well many of the smaller streets around them, can now place orders with KCOM.

Fibre broadband from KCOM is already available to more than 75,000 properties across Hull and East Yorkshire.

Earlier this year, the company announced plans speed up its rollout of fibre, taking the total number of properties able to access Lightstream to 150,000 by December 2017.

By that time KCOM’s total capital investment in installing fibre to the premises broadband – which completely replaces the firm’s old copper network – will have reached £60m.

Sue Helmont, KCOM’s director of consumer services, said: “We’ve ramped up the pace of our fibre roll-out to make Lightstream available to more households sooner.

“As our customers spend more time online through their smartphones, tablets and internet TVs, they want faster speeds and we’re delighted to be able to give more of them the best possible online experience.

'Priority booking'

“Demand for the service is high so last week we offered priority booking to people who had registered their interested in Lightstream in advance before installation appointments became available to everyone.”

Residents can find out if Lightstream is already available at their address by entering their postcode on the KCOM website.

Announcing the accelerated fibre rollout plans in April, KCOM managing director Gary Young said: “We’re focused on improving services for our customers, which is why we’re investing many millions of pounds to make Hull the UK’s ultrafast broadband capital.

“During the next phase of our deployment we’ll be focusing on taking our Lightstream service to areas of our network where speeds are slower than average because of the length of copper cable from customers’ homes and businesses to the telephone exchange.”
