Three to refund customers contacting loved ones after Hurricane Irma
Three is allowing its customers to contact friends and family in the Caribbean without the fear of extra fees in the wake of Hurricane Irma.
Earlier today Three tweeted: “Customers affected by the hurricanes in the Caribbean, please don’t worry about using your phone to contact loved ones during this time. We’ll reimburse all associated costs.”
Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic storm in a decade, has caused catastrophic effects as it ravages through the Caribbean.
The category five hurricane, the highest possible level, has sustained wind speeds reaching 295km/h (185mph).
It has been reported that the four most solid buildings on Saint Martin have been destroyed. On St Barts, the fire brigade station has been flooded with a metre of water and both islands have suffered power cuts and communications disruption.
A spokesperson for Three told Cable.co.uk: “Our thoughts go out to those affected by Hurricane Irma. We will be reimbursing all associated costs for any Three customers who are contacting loved ones.”
The US National Hurricane Centre has issued warnings for Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, St Kitts and Nevis, Saba, Eustatius and Sint Maarten, Saint Martin and Saint Barthelemy, the British Virgin Islands, The US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Vieques and Culebra, the northern region of Dominican Republic and Guadeloupe.
Across the Caribbean thousands of people have been evacuated in preparation for the catastrophe caused by the storm. Many airports have been closed and authorities are urging people to go to public shelters.
So far Three is the only mobile provider to announce that it will reimburse customers during the storm.
Last week, Three launched a new mobile network offering customers a refund on their unused data.
The new MVNO, called SMARTY, charges a standard amount per GB of data whether its included in your plan or not.
Running on Three’s 4G network, SMARTY launched last week with three SIM-only plans, all of which come with unlimited calls and texts.
