Three's new mobile network SMARTY offers a refund on unused data

Tuesday, September 5th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Three has launched a new mobile network aiming to be the “simplest and most flexible” in the UK.

The new MVNO, called SMARTY, charges a standard amount per GB of data whether its included in your plan or not.

It also promises to refund customers for any data they don’t use at the end of each month.

Running on Three’s 4G network, SMARTY launched last week with three SIM-only plans, all of which come with unlimited calls and texts.

The tariffs all include a £5 service charge and data is charged at £1.25 per GB, so the Small plan gives you 2GB of data for £7.50 a month, Medium gives you 4GB for £10 and Large 8GB for £15.

If you exceed your data allowance, you’ll be charged that same rate of £1.25 for every extra GB of data you use.

At the end of each month, unused data will also be refunded at a rate of £1.25 per GB – and SMARTY’s plans are all on monthly rolling contracts so you can leave whenever you want.

Elin McLean, general manager for SMARTY, said: “There is currently a wide variety of different mobile plans and tariffs out there, and these suit a lot of people.

“That said, we know that many others are looking for more simplicity and honesty from their network.

“They may not want to commit to a contract and want the freedom to manage their mobile in line with their lifestyles. That’s where SMARTY comes in.”

'Immense flexibility'

Ms McLean said SMARTY offers customers “the simplest and most honest mobile network experience ever”, adding that the offer of a data refund is “unlike anything that’s been offered by a UK network before”.

“This benefit, coupled with the fact we also offer a blanket cost for each GB of data you use across all our plans, reflects our ambition to deliver a smart and cost-effective mobile option that provides customers with immense flexibility when it comes to managing their data usage.”

Vodafone has also launched a new mobile brand, appealing to a younger generation by offering data-free access to a host of social media sites.

VOXI’s entry-level tariff gives you unlimited calls and texts and 2GB of data for £10 a month – and you’ll be able to use Facebook, Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Pinterest, Snapchat and Viber without eating into your allowance.
