OnePlus 6 launch event sells out in just 9 hours
Tickets for the OnePlus 6 smartphone launch in London on 16 May sold out in less than nine hours.
The Chinese manufacturer has held similar events in the past as part of its community-focused approach. When it started making mobile phones, you could only buy one if you were invited by the company itself or by friends who already had one.
OnePlus smartphones have a reputation for high-end specifications without the associated price tag, earning it a band of loyal followers in what is an extremely competitive Android marketplace, dominated by Samsung and, increasingly, Huawei.
It has held similar community events in the past and promises this one in London, entitled ‘The Speed You Need’ is going to be the biggest one it has ever held.
The cost of entry started at £16 and promised access to the launch, the chance to be one of the first to try out the new device, and a ‘swag’ bag, which OnePlus promised contained enough goodies to more than offset the price of the ticket. Ticket-holders for the OnePlus 5T launch got a backpack, T-shirt, stickers and a voucher that could be used to part-fund a purchase of the smartphone.
"OnePlus has always worked hand-in-hand with its community and their response to The Speed You Need has been nothing short of amazing - I'd like to thank our community for their incredible passion. We can't wait to see people’s reactions to the OnePlus 6,” declared Carl Pel, OnePlus co-founder.
CEO Pete Lau has said the OnePlus 6 will have an "honest" glass design without gimmicks. Speculation suggests the handset will have thin bezels and an iPhone X-style notch at the top, just like the Huawei P20 before it. Other possible specifications are a 6.3-inch display, 16 megapixel camera and 256GB of internal storage – with no support for MicroSD card slots.
But for official confirmation, you’ll just have to wait until the official unveiling on 16 May. For those who didn’t get tickets, OnePlus has promised to livestream the entire event live.
If you can’t wait for the OnePlus 6, then you can still get a OnePlus 5T, but the only operator you can get one from is O2, which has an exclusivity agreement. The cheapest deal is £89.99 a month upfront and £31 a month for 1GB of data and unlimited calls and texts, but the best value deal will get you 15GB for £41 a month and a £79.99 upfront.
