Tickets now on sale for OnePlus 6 launch event
There have been plenty of teasers about the OnePlus 6 smartphone, but it's only now that we've been given the launch date - 16 May.
Following what the company says is its most successful year ever with the release of the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, OnePlus plans to launch the new phone with a big community event in London.
'The Speed You Need' event will be held in London at 5pm on 16 May. More than 1,000 tickets are now available, with attendees able to try out the new phone for themselves.
They'll also get a swag bag of promotional items - and the company says this is worth a good deal more than the price of the ticket. At the 5T launch event, for example, attendees were given a backpack, an event t-shirt, stickers and a coupon for the OnePlus 5T. And if attendees to the OnePlus 6 launch buy one of the new phones while they're there, they'll also get another mystery gift.
Early Bird tickets for the launch cost £16, and are available until 8pm on Friday 27 April; after that, a ticket will set you back £30. A 'Plus One' ticket costs £20. But you don't have to pay to watch the event, as it will also be live-streamed - you can sign up here.
OnePlus is heavily stressing the quality and design features of the new phone, and appears to be hoping to take on the likes of Apple and Samsung.
The company has already released several snippets of information about the OnePlus 6, including the fact that it will run on a super-fast Qualcomm SnapDragon 845 chipset. We're told it will be water-resistant and will use 'new materials', and will have an all-glass design, with the Corning Gorilla Glass back protected by five layers of Nanotech coating.
"The advantages of glass over metal are manifold: glass communicates a transparent, bright, and pure feeling," says CEO Pete Lau in a blog post.
"The way glass transforms under different lighting is a particularly important challenge – the OnePlus design team tested over 70 glass prototypes before selecting the best one."
The phone is also expected to have a new edge-to-edge AMOLED display with a notch at the top, and will probably offer wireless charging. Other predicted features include a dual-camera system on the back for Portrait Mode and optical zoom, as well as the company's trademark Dash fast-charging.
There's no word on price, but various leaks in China have indicated that we'll probably be looking at something around £374 for the 64GB model, rising to something like £430 for the 128GB version and around the £500 mark for the 256GB model.
