TV viewers 'more satisfied' with Netflix than the BBC

Monday, July 17th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

TV viewers are more satisfied with Netflix than the BBC, a new report suggests.

Ofcom’s ‘BBC distinctiveness’ research shows that 65% of Netflix subscribers rate their satisfaction with the service 8 out of 10 or higher.

This compares to 51% for the BBC, 50% for Sky and 48% for Amazon Prime.

Around a third of viewers rated ITV and Channel 4 at 8 out of 10 or higher, and less than a fifth did the same for Channel 5.

The report measures “audience perceptions of distinctiveness” regarding the BBC and is based on 2,114 face-to-face interviews carried out by research firm Ipsos MORI between 23 June and 3 July 2017.

It says viewers in social grades AB and those who watch BBC One or BBC Two every day are the most satisfied with BBC TV. Scottish viewers are the least positive about BBC channels.

The report also shows how well people think the BBC is performing across what Ofcom calls five “distinctiveness indicators”.

More than half of those polled say the BBC is performing well when it comes to showing high quality programmes and a mix of different types of programme.

Just under half are pleased with the BBC’s efforts to show programmes made specifically for UK audiences and programmes that appeal to a wide range of people across the UK.

But less than a third rated it highly for taking a chance on programmes based on new or innovative ideas.

When asked about the importance of public service-related genres, 68% rate the importance of the BBC showing current affairs programmes as very important.

Education is seen as very important by 62%, followed by children’s programmes (56%), comedy (51%) and arts (48%).

Religious programming (27%) is seen as the least important of the genres included in the poll.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, all genres have more perceived values to their viewers than to TV viewers as a whole.
