UKTV snaps up three US crime dramas for its Alibi channel
You can't beat a good murder, and fans will be delighted to hear that there are three new crime shows coming to Britain's biggest multichannel network, UKTV, this year.
UKTV's snapped up the UK rights for the programmes from Sony Pictures Television (SPT) for its premium crime drama channel, Alibi.
Heading the new lineup is Carter, a brand-new detective drama commissioned by SPT Networks and produced by Amaze Film + Television. Exclusive to Alibi, it will hit the screens in June.
It stars Jerry O'Connell of Billions fame as Harley Carter, a detective on a hit American TV show in Hollywood - until, that is, he's forced to return to his sleepy hometown after an embarrassing public meltdown.
Once home, he becomes a detective for real, partnering with his two best friends, Sam Shaw, played by Sydney Poitier, and Dave Leigh, played by Kristian Bruun.
"Carter is a brilliant, fast-paced new detective drama with a twist," said Emma Ayech, channel director for Alibi. "With a star-studded cast, and action and adventure around every corner, we are delighted to add Carter to Alibi's growing slate of glossy crime shows."
'A great range of enjoyable series'
The deal with Sony also covers The Guardian, starring Simon Baker of The Mentalist as Nick Fallin, a lawyer sentenced to community service for drug-related crimes. He carries on working for his father's law firm as he struggles to overcome his addiction.
Meanwhile, Unforgettable features Poppy Montgomery of Without a Trace as a former detective with a rare condition that means she's unable to forget anything. She takes up detecting once again as partner to her ex-boyfriend.
Both series will air later this year. However, neither is entirely new to the UK, with The Guardian having previously aired on Universal Channel and the former Disney UK channel ABC, while Unforgettable has already run on Sky Living.
The rights deal builds on previous agreements between UKTV and SPT, which saw mini-series The Red Tent come to UKTV's Drama channel.
"We are thrilled to be bringing such a great range of enjoyable series to UKTV audiences," said Mark Young, SPT's senior vice president, UK, Iberia & Africa distribution. "Carter, Unforgettable and The Guardian will have a great home on Alibi and we are excited to continue our relationship with UKTV."
As the only TV channel dedicated to crime drama, Alibi's a must for crime fans, featuring hit US series such as Rosewood and Quantico, as well as home-grown content like Miss Marple, Death in Paradise, Father Brown and Silent Witness.
Earlier this year, Frankie Drake Mysteries also launched on Alibi. It has reached more than 1.26 million viewers since January and has recently been picked up for a second series.
Alibi is one of 11 channels on UKTV, alongside UKTV Play, Dave, W, Gold, Yesterday, Drama, Really, Home, Eden and Good Food. To get it, you'll need a TV subscription from Sky, Virgin Media, BT, TalkTalk or Plusnet, or access to a streaming service such as NOW TV or TV Player, where it's variously available either as part of a package or as on-demand content.
