US network behind Breaking Bad to launch UK channel for BT customers
The US cable network behind shows including Breaking Bad and Mad Men is to launch its UK channel exclusively on BT TV later this year.
AMC in the UK will debut in September with the exclusive UK television premiere of Walking Dead spin-off series Fear the Walking Dead.
The channel will showcase other soon-to-be-announced dramas from AMC Networks, series from other leading producers and a selection of acclaimed films.
AMC in the UK is the latest in a number of recent additions to BT’s TV offering.
Last week, it revealed that all of next season’s UEFA Champions League and Europa League football matches will be free for BT TV customers.
Coverage will include live Champions League matches fronted by Gary Lineker, Rio Ferdinand and Jake Humphrey, and a new ‘Goals’ show that will keep viewers up-to-speed with all eight live games.
BT also said it will launch Europe’s first 4K channel – BT Sport Ultra HD – in August.
In recent months, it has also added Netflix, Sky Sports 1 and 2 and a new BT Store, which lets users buy and keep movies and box sets, to its TV service.
Delia Bushell, managing director of BT TV and BT Sport, said: “We’re delighted to be launching AMC for the first time in the UK, enabling our viewers to watch series such as Fear the Walking Dead exclusively from BT.
“AMC has showcased some of the biggest and most celebrated series on US television in recent years, including Breaking Bad, and Mad Men.
“We’re confident our viewers will enjoy AMC’s cinematic approach to storytelling and look forward to offering them an outstanding selection of TV series and films in the months ahead.”
AMC launched its brand outside North America for the first time late last year and is now seen on subscription TV platforms in more than 125 countries across Europe, Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Ed Carroll, AMC Networks’ chief operating officer, said: “AMC has become synonymous with bold, dramatic original programming of the highest quality.
“We’re excited to partner with BT to launch AMC for the first time in the UK.
“This agreement highlights the strong demand for our channels and will enable us to continue developing a far-reaching platform for AMC’s original programming.”
