Village with 'UK's slowest broadband' gets 100Mbps fibre upgrade

Wednesday, November 2nd 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

A village found to have the UK’s slowest broadband earlier this year has been given access to speeds up to 100Mbps.

Research published by Cable.co.uk in March found residents of Miserden in Gloucestershire were struggling with average speeds of 1.3Mbps.

One villager using Cable.co.uk’s speed checker recorded a speed of just 0.12Mbps.

But according to broadband provider Voneus, such poor connections should now be a thing of the past.

The company has used a combination of fibre to the premises (FTTP) and wireless technology to connect a number of homes in the village as well as the local pub.

Voneus is also providing broadband to the village hall, free of charge.

The firm’s sales director, Gary Day, said: “The successful rollout in Miserden is the result of nearly a year’s worth of careful consultation with the community.

“Voneus worked closely with residents, businesses and Miserden Park Estates to understand the challenges resulting from inadequate broadband speeds and it’s a pleasure to see the village reaping the rewards of a robust internet offering.”

Miserden isn’t the only Gloucestershire village to get a broadband speed boost in recent months.

In June, a school in Chedworth became the 1,000th premises given access to ultrafast speeds as part of the Fastershire programme.

Pupils and staff at St Andrew’s Church of England Primary School can now access speeds of 50Mbps and have the infrastructure in place to access 1Gbps.

Fastershire is taking fibre to the premises broadband to more than 6,500 premises in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire by the end of 2017.

The second phase of the project, which is being delivered by Gigaclear, is connecting areas not covered by commercial rollouts.
