Virgin boosts top business broadband speeds to 300Mbps
Virgin Media is to launch a new 300Mbps broadband service for its business customers early next year.
The service will deliver what Virgin claims are the fastest widely available broadband speeds in the UK.
The announcement comes just a day after the company started offering free broadband installation to small businesses following the closure of the government’s voucher scheme.
Virgin will cover up to £1,000 of installation costs for new business customers in the cities where the Superconnected Cities scheme operated.
The company also recently announced boosts to the speeds available to its residential customers, offering a 200Mbps service as part of its new 'Vivid' product.
Announcing the latest speed upgrade for businesses at the Great Telco Debate in London, Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “Every day businesses tell us that faster broadband speeds increase productivity and help deliver better services for customers.
“At Virgin Media Business we’re focused on enabling businesses to reach their potential by delivering better services and greater capacity.
“Our 300Mbps service will set a new benchmark for business broadband in the UK.”
Last month, Virgin announced that it would be providing firms in Manchester’s ‘tech quarter’ with ultrafast broadband.
The announcement followed the creation of Tech North – a government-backed technology start-up in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.
The firm is installing fibre cables in 300 buildings, giving some 3,000 businesses access to ultrafast speeds.
The initiative was welcomed by Sir Richard Leese, the leader of Manchester City Council, and Mike Cherry, director of policy at the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Cllr Leese said: “Quick, reliable broadband is the backbone of our digital economy, transforming the way businesses operate and the services they can provide.
“This announcement represents a bespoke ultrafast broadband package for small and medium enterprises and will help support some of Manchester’s most digitally-minded and creative businesses.”
Mr Cherry added: “It's vital we encourage economic growth right across the UK, particularly in the northern powerhouse where there is so much potential waiting to be unlocked.
“This sort of investment is essential if we are to encourage greater job creation and growth outside London and the south east.
“Small businesses are the backbone of the economy – it’s crucial they continue to get the investment and support they need from larger companies and the government so they can deliver the jobs and prosperity we all want to see.”
