Virgin Media announces £40m ultrafast broadband boost for Leeds

Thursday, July 30th 2015 by Ellen Branagh

Up to 80,000 homes and businesses in Leeds are set to benefit from a £40m investment by Virgin Media to bring ultrafast broadband speeds to the city.

Middleton is the first area in the city to benefit from the multi-million pound investment, with 11,000 homes now able to start to switch to Virgin.

The work is part of Virgin's ‘Project Lightning’, which is bringing connectivity to 4m UK premises over the next five years.

The company has described the £3bn project as the single largest investment in the UK’s broadband infrastructure for a decade.

The investment in Leeds covers the LS postcode, which includes the city, suburbs and surrounding communities.

It means around 80,000 consumers and small businesses will benefit from first time access to ultrafast internet connectivity with speeds up to 152Mbps.

Virgin Media is connecting more premises in the region prioritised according to demand, and people can register their interest on its Cable My Street website.

As well as providing ultrafast broadband to consumers, the project will also help businesses in the city.

Virgin said it has more than 700 business customers in the area, mainly small and medium enterprises.

It is also the main connectivity provider to Yorkshire and Humberside’s Public Services Network which, with Leeds City Council, helps deliver public services to 5.5m people across the region.

Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: "I am delighted that we have secured this investment for the residents of Leeds.

“Access to high speed broadband is the cornerstone of a thriving local economy helping residents connect and businesses to grow.”

Virgin Media CEO Tom Mockridge added: “Local authorities have an important role in getting ultrafast broadband to more people, more quickly.

“Virgin Media is investing £3bn to improve the UK’s digital infrastructure.

“We need more local authorities, like Leeds City Council, to work with us to cut the red tape and secure investment for their residents.”

The investment in Leeds comes after Virgin last month announced that Manchester was the first city to benefit from its £3bn rollout of ultrafast broadband.

A £75m investment is making speeds of 152Mbps available to 150,000 homes and businesses in the city, as well as creating 500 new jobs.
