Virgin Media customers set for 4.7% price rise in November

Virgin Media is to increase the price of its broadband, phone and TV packages from November.

The majority of customers will see their bills increase by between £1.99 and £3.99 as an average hike of 4.7% kicks in.

Virgin has started writing to customers to explain the changes and said some people will see a change to their bill from October.

A spokesperson for the provider said: “We do everything we can to balance keeping our prices competitive while investing to meet the ever-increasing appetite for broadband and content.

“Online usage increased by more than 35% in the last year and streaming now accounts for nearly 60% of the total traffic on Virgin Media’s network.

“We’re investing more in our ultrafast network to continue offering the UK’s fastest widely-available speeds.

“This all comes on top of must-see TV programming – from Virgin TV Exclusives to the only place where you can watch all of the live football action from both Sky and BT Sport in a single package.”

Virgin has also made changes to some of its bundles that it says will only affect new customers.

There is no longer an upfront cost for existing customers on the Mix bundle or above wanting to upgrade to a V6 set top box, but they will still have to pay a £20 activation fee.

Customers on the Full House package can now add Sky Cinema for £15, Sky Sports for £25 or both for £35.

'Eye-watering speeds'

In March, Virgin upped the speed of its entry-level broadband package from 50Mbps to 100Mbps – faster than the top speed offered by Sky, BT or TalkTalk.

The changes to its bundles, which coincided with the launch of the Virgin Fibre brand, also saw speeds of 300Mbps made widely available for the first time.

Virgin CEO Tom Mockridge said: “By beefing up our bundles we’re leaving our competitors in the rear view mirror, starting where they finish.

“Eye-watering speeds, a better box and top-notch TV is a winning combination.

“More and more switchers tell us they are joining Virgin Media for our faster speeds and we understand why – whether it’s 4K Netflix, box sets in multiple rooms or online gaming, the best entertainment requires the best broadband and we’re making sure our customers are covered with these bundles at incredible value.”
