Virgin Media customers to continue getting TiVo boxes under new deal
Virgin Media will continue to offer TiVo boxes as part of its TV packages for the foreseeable future.
A new agreement extends the existing five-year partnership between the two companies in the UK for a further three years.
As part of the new agreement, Virgin Media has committed to the development of next-generation solutions from TiVo.
Virgin Media launched the first set-top box incorporating TiVo software in 2010.
The provider has since installed TiVo enabled set-top boxes in more than 2.5 million homes.
The platform brought together broadcast TV, thousands of hours of on demand programming and web browsing in a single set-top box.
In 2012, Virgin Media launched the award-winning Virgin TV Anywhere service, part of its vision to create a seamless experience for TV viewers.
Gregor McNeil, Virgin Media's chief operating officer, said: “We’re pleased to continue our relationship with TiVo in the UK.
“Virgin Media continues to lead the UK market in bringing together the broadest choice of programming along with the best way to access it.”
Virgin Media offers two TiVo boxes – a 1,000GB hard drive capable of recording and storing about 500 hours of standard TV or 100 hours of HD TV, and a 500GB box that can record 250 hours of standard TV or 50 hours of HD.
The boxes were among the first to recommend TV shows based on viewing habits and to allow users to scroll back through the TV guide and record programmes.
Virgin TV Anywhere allows Virgin’s TiVo customers to stream content from 67 channels over any internet connection.
Android and iOS apps also allow customers to control their TiVo box from their smartphone.
David Sandford, vice president and general manager of TiVo's International Operator Business, said: “Virgin Media has been among our most innovative customers, successfully deploying TiVo and leveraging our integration of linear, VOD and OTT content sources to create an unmatched offering in the UK.
“TiVo is proud to serve Virgin Media with critical solutions in a challenging and competitive landscape, helping to drive revenue growth and material gains in customer satisfaction.”
In the US, a top-of-the-range TiVo Roamio Pro box can record six programmes at once, has up to 3,000 hours of recording capacity and comes with built-in streaming to mobile devices.
