Virgin Media is the best broadband for streaming Netflix, says Netflix

Tuesday, August 15th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Virgin Media has the best broadband for watching Netflix in the UK, new data from the streaming service shows.

Netflix measures the prime time performance of its service on Britain’s six biggest broadband networks.

The speed measured against all six providers improved in July, but Virgin comes out on top with a speed of 4.01Mbps.

BT is second with 3.88Mbps, followed by two other BT companies – Plusnet in third with 3.64Mbps and EE in fourth with 3.57Mbps.

TalkTalk, which tied with Sky in June, edges ahead of its rival with 3.51Mbps compared to Sky’s 3.49Mbps.

Remember, these figures are not a measure of overall broadband performance but a measure of the average bitrate – the amount of data transferred in a given period of time – of Netflix content.

Netflix stresses that the speeds in its index are not a measure of the maximum throughput or the maximum capacity of an internet service provider (ISP).

Globally, the UK is a little way off Netflix’s top 10 with an average of 3.74Mbps compared to Iceland, who take 10th place with 3.86Mbps.

According to the Netflix ISP Speed Index the best place in the world to stream Orange Is The New Black or House of Cards is Switzerland, which tops the rankings with an average speed of 4.28Mbps.

Every provider measured by Netflix in Switzerland recorded a higher bitrate than Virgin Media’s 4.01Mbps.

Singapore, which topped Cable.co.uk’s world broadband speed league with an average download speed of 55.13Mbps, sits just outside Netflix’s top 10 with a speed of 3.85Mbps.

Last month, an Ofcom report suggested that UK viewers were more satfisfied with Netflix than the BBC.

The regulator’s ‘BBC distinctiveness’ research showed that 65% of Netflix subscribers rated their satisfaction with the service 8 out of 10 or higher.

This compares to 51% for the BBC, 50% for Sky and 48% for Amazon Prime.

Around a third of viewers rated ITV and Channel 4 at 8 out of 10 or higher, and less than a fifth did the same for Channel 5.
