Virgin Media launches 'game-changing' new TiVo V6 box

Wednesday, November 30th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Virgin media has launched its new set top box - the TiVo V6.

As expected, the box is 4K-ready and lets you record more programmes simultaneously than previously possible.

But there are also a few features Virgin had managed to keep secret in the run-up to today's launch event in London.

The Virgin Media Store allows users to download films and get the DVD delivered in the post – much like the service offered by Virgin's big rivals Sky.

There is also a new kids app aimed at pre-schoolers, a revamped user interface and the TellyTablet – a 14" tablet Virgin describes as a "personal smart TV".

The V6 itself is quite a bit smaller than the previous TiVo box but has, according to Virgin, 10-times the power and comes with 1Tb of storage – enough for 500 hours of SD or 100 hours of HD recordings.

It will allow you to record up to six programmes at the same time while watching or streaming a seventh.

The new remote also comes with a nifty feature of its own – if you lose it, press a button on the V6 box and the remote will beep.

The new box, which will be available to order from January 2017, will cost £99.95. New and existing customer taking the Full House or VIP bundles will pay £49.95.

'Raises the bar'

The TellyTablet is Virgin's first real venture into providing a multi-room service and its HD screen is claimed to offer the same up-close viewing experience as a 50" TV.

It runs on Android OS (Marshmallow) and has four built-in speakers and a 7-8 hour battery life.

It will be available in December as part of a range of mobile bundles also including Samsung smartphones, or for a one-off fee of £299.

The kids app will be available to download for free from February for Virgin customers on the Fun bundle or above.

It will come with access to more than 1,500 on-demand programmes, interactive games and picture books, and a button – designed specifically for toddlers – that plays the same show five times on repeat.

David Bouchier, chief digital entertainment officer at Virgin Media, said: “Our new Virgin TV line-up raises the bar in home entertainment, marrying the latest and smartest technology with the very best TV programmes, all underpinned by our ultrafast cable network. This is game-changing TV.”
