Virgin Media 'to criticise BBC Trust over digital TV service'

Thursday, March 4th 2010 by Cable.co.uk

Broadband provider Virgin Media is set to speak out against the BBC Trust's plans for the Project Canvas digital TV service.

Fibre optic broadband provider Virgin Media is set to criticise the BBC Trust's plans for the Project Canvas service today (March 4th), according to reports.

The company, which also offers digital TV and home phone bundles, is expected to speak out over proposals which would mean all providers have to use a single Project Canvas brand controlled by the BBC and its partners.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett will highlight the issue at the Cable Congress conference in Brussels.

He will say: "The BBC Trust has stubbornly ignored all requests to address our concerns by imposing safeguards to prevent the BBC emerging as de facto gatekeeper of the digital world."

Such a move highlights that the Trust cannot regulate the BBC objectively, he will add.

Virgin Media recently topped the latest broadband speed test by Cable.co.uk, recording an average connection of 8.4Mbps during February.
