Virgin Media to 'embrace' Netflix and LOVEFiLM
Virgin Media chief executive Neil Berkett discussed the firm's future strategy at Cable Congress following the takeover by Liberty Global.
Virgin Media will aim to integrate the services of rivals such as Netflix and LOVEFiLM into its offering instead of competing with them, according to chief executive Neil Berkett.
He made his comments at the 2013 Cable Congress in London, which is taking place roughly one month after US cable giant Liberty Global announced it would acquire Virgin Media in a deal worth £15 billion.
In remarks reported by Bloomberg, Mr Berkett said his company's approach will be to "get every content asset you possibly can on the platform".
He added that "we've got a far greater chance as an industry by embracing over-the-top services" and claimed that any "U-turn and digression" from this strategy following the takeover is unlikely.
The future relationship between Virgin Media and TiVo has been questioned due to the merger with Liberty Global, as the US firm has recently introduced a competing set-top box in European markets.
However, Liberty chief executive Mike Fries said during the London conference that he expects Virgin to continue offering the TiVo box for the next few years. The box is currently used by about 1.3 million Virgin Media subscribers.
