Virgin Media to launch new 4K TiVo box later this month

Friday, November 4th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Virgin Media is expected to launch its new 4K TiVo box at the end of the month.

The company has sent out invites to an event on 30 November promising “a first look at something unmissable”.

And in its financial results, published today, it refers to a TV re-launch being underway with “new TV bundles, new user-interface and Virgin exclusives”.

Virgin’s corporate Twitter feed gave its followers a sneak preview of the new V6 box (pictured) back in August, but little else is known about the ultra HD device.

Virgin also announced that 50% of the properties connecting as part of its Project Lightning rollout would get fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband, also known as fibre to the home.

Digital minister Matt Hancock welcomed the news: “Virgin Media’s investment in fibre to the home is exactly the kind of thing we want to see industry delivering across the UK.

“This technology is key to providing the internet experience, in terms of both speed and reliability, that families and businesses will need in future.

“Initiatives like ‘Project Lightning’ will be instrumental in making sure Britain has the right connectivity for decades to come.”

Virgin’s Quarter 3 results, which cover the three months up to the end of September, also confirmed the acquisition of Arqiva WiFi.

The network of 31,000 wi-fi access points across 6,500 UK locations is now a part of Virgin Media Business.

'Connectivity matters'

Arqiva WiFi hotspots are located in almost every major UK airport, cover hundreds of banks, restaurants and motorway service stations, and extend to more than 100,000 hotel rooms.

Virgin’s existing outdoor wi-fi network already provides connectivity on 250 London Underground stations and last year it used ‘smart pavement’ technology to bring wi-fi coverage to the high street in Chesham, Bucks.

Peter Kelly, managing director of Virgin Media Business, said: “Millions of homes and businesses across the country already rely on Virgin Media for ultrafast broadband.

“By complementing our existing offer with the acquisition of one of the UK’s biggest and best public wi-fi providers we’ll soon be able to expand the same high quality connectivity outdoors.

“In today’s digital age connectivity matters, whether you are at home, at work or on the go.”
