Virgin Media to offer 100Mbps broadband as standard
Virgin Media is to start offering 100Mbps broadband as standard.
The provider will also be making speeds of 300Mbps widely available for the first time.
Launching the new Virgin Fibre brand today, the company announced an entry-level broadband package faster than the top speed of many of its rivals.
Virgin also said its new TiVo box, the V6, will now be included in the Mix, Fun and Full House bundles as standard.
It said existing customers will be able to upgrade to the V6 box but has yet to say whether they will be getting speed upgrades.
Virgin CEO Tom Mockridge said: “By beefing up our bundles we’re leaving our competitors in the rear view mirror, starting where they finish.
“Eye-watering speeds, a better box and top-notch TV is a winning combination.
“More and more switchers tell us they are joining Virgin Media for our faster speeds and we understand why – whether it’s 4K Netflix, box sets in multiple rooms or online gaming, the best entertainment requires the best broadband and we’re making sure our customers are covered with these bundles at incredible value.”
The new VIVID 100 plan will cost £32.25 including line rental and VIVID 200 will be £37.25. VIVID 200 Gamer, which comes with a slightly faster upload speed, is £42.25 and VIVID 300 is £47.25.
The Player bundle with 100Mbps broadband will be £45, Mix is £52, Fun is £57 and the Full House bundle is either £73 with 200Mbps broadband or £83 for 300Mbps.
The new bundles will be available from 30 March.
Virgin’s next generation set-top box, the V6, was launched in November and lets viewers record six shows while watching a seventh, supports 4K ultra-high definition and comes with 1TB of storage.
David Bouchier, Virgin's chief digital entertainment officer, said in November: “Our new Virgin TV line-up raises the bar in home entertainment, marrying the latest and smartest technology with the very best TV programmes, all underpinned by our ultrafast cable network. This is game-changing TV.”
