Virgin Media gives customers 9GB for £13 as it triples data on SIM-only plans
Virgin Media has tripled the data allowances on its SIM-only packages in a deal it is describing as “hotter than an electric blanket in the Sahara”.
The ‘hot’ deal sees the £13 package increased to 9GB of data with 2,500 minutes and unlimited texts.
The middle package in Virgin’s line-up costs £12 and has been boosted to now include 6GB with the same 2,500 minutes and unlimited texts.
The now 3GB tariff includes 1,500 minutes and unlimited texts for £9 a month.
These deals are currently only available on 12-month contracts.
As an added bonus the plans also include free usage on Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
For customers who already have Virgin Media TV or broadband, the provider is throwing in free unlimited calls to other Virgin Mobiles.
Virgin Media customers can further increase their connectivity by downloading the Virgin Media WiFi app. This service is exclusive to Virgin Media customers and allows you you connect to more than two million wireless hotspots across Britain.
Virgin Media is powered by EE’s network and says the “4G coverage reaches 99% of the UK population”.
Is this a good SIM-only deal?
These days the turnover for new handset releases is ridiculously fast. This often means that customers are still in possession of a good quality highly functioning smartphone at the end of a contract.
In these instances a SIM-only plan is ideal and often can be a cheap way of getting hold of a larger data allowance with a smaller price tag.
There are many SIM-only deals on the market at the moment that offer a large data allowance for a decent price but Virgin Media’s offering will appeal to customers who spend a lot of time on social media.
If you have a tablet and just need the data allowance, Virgin Media offers a range of data SIMs.
On a 30-day rolling contract 10GB of data will cost £20. The provider says its 4G connections provide speeds up to 40Mbps.
Just like the pay monthly SIM-only deals, this also gives customers unlimited use of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
What else is on the market?
SMARTY is relatively new to the mobile network game and offers discounts on unused data as its main selling point.
Its 4G SIM-only plan has 8GB for £15 a month with unlimited texts and calls. Alternatively the provider offers half the amount of data for £10 a month.
SMARTY works out the discount by monitoring how much each customer uses on a rate of £1.25 per GB. Anything that is not used is discounted off the next month’s plan.
BT Mobile is giving away a free £70 gift card to sweeten a SIM-only deal. The provider is offering 10GB for £17 a month. Free access to BT sport and unlimited BT wi-fi is another feature included in the deal.
This price includes the £5 discount exclusive to existing BT Broadband customers.
BT also has a Family Sim scheme that offers discounts to customers who order more than one SIM-only plan. For example anyone who orders three SIMs will save £12 says BT.
Three gives customers 8GB for £12 a month with its SIM-only deal. With this customers can make up to 600 minutes of calls and unlimited texts.
This deal includes Three’s Go Binge feature that provides unlimited data allowance for streaming video and music from sites like Netflix and Deezer.
All of the above deals are available on 12-month contracts.
