Virgin Media's top broadband speed to hit a 'Vivid' 200Mbps

Tuesday, September 29th 2015 by Ellen Branagh

Virgin Media is boosting its customers’ broadband speeds with the launch of a new ultrafast brand it has dubbed ‘Vivid’.

Existing Virgin broadband customers will be able to upgrade from speeds of 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps to 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps.

Ultrafast speeds of 100Mbps and above from Virgin will be known as ‘Vivid’, the company said, with the launch of its Vivid 200Mbps speed creating "a new standard in ultrafast connectivity".

The new top speed will allow customers to download a two-hour HD movie in 3 minutes 2 seconds and a music album in just three seconds.

The company has already started contacting its 4.6m broadband customers to explain how they can opt in to an upgrade from 1 October.

90% of customers will be able to upgrade by the end of this year, it said.

This is the third time Virgin has boosted broadband speeds in five years – taking its fastest speed from 50Mbps in 2010 to Vivid 200Mbps in 2015.

Gregor McNeil, managing director of consumer at Virgin Media, said: “Our message is simple: if you want to be certain that you are signing up to true ultrafast broadband speeds of 100Mbps and above, Vivid from Virgin Media is the new standard.

“The speed of a customer’s broadband connection matters; when you have more you can do more.”

'You can do more'

Virgin said it is investing heavily in its ultrafast network to meet consumer demand.

Data usage on the company’s network is growing at a rate of 60% each year, and if it continues usage will be 10,000% higher by 2025.

Earlier this year, Virgin announced its ‘Project Lightning’, a £3bn ultrafast broadband rollout to bring connectivity to 4m UK premises over the next five years.

The company has made multi-million pound investments in Leeds, Manchester and Nottingham as part of the project, which it claims is the single largest investment in the UK’s broadband infrastructure for a decade.

In August, Netflix revealed that its own research had found that Virgin Media was the best internet service provider for watching the streaming service.

According to Netflix’s monthly speed index, Virgin finished top of the UK index for July.
