Virgin Mobile has the UK's cheapest iPhone X deal

Thursday, November 16th 2017 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

The iPhone X is the most talked-about phone of the year and we wouldn’t blame you if all the hype has made you want one just a little bit. So what’s the cheapest way to get hold of one?

No messing around, the answer is Virgin Mobile. Right now the provider is offering an iPhone X for £37 a month, with no upfront cost.

The reason it’s so cheap is because Virgin allows you to choose whether to spread the cost of a handset over two years or three. If you opt for three years, this brings the monthly cost of the device down considerably.

A clear downside is that you’re tied into a contract for an extra year – although past generations of Apple’s flagship device have proved to be pretty long-lasting and there’s no reason to expect the iPhone X to be any different in that regard.

For £37 you get 1.2GB of data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts. It’s fair to say that’s quite a modest amount of data, to say the least – the chances are that if you’re even considering a top-of-the-range phone such as the iPhone X, you’ll struggle not to eat through an allowance of 1.2GB pretty quickly.

If you like to talk then getting through 300 minutes also isn’t much of a challenge, even if you do get unlimited calls to other Virgin Mobile phones if you have Virgin TV or broadband at home.

There are a couple of mitigating factors, however. All of Virgin’s mobile plans come with data-free messaging on WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Twitter, so if you use most of your data chatting away on one or more of those three apps, you might just be ok.

Virgin also lets you upgrade or downgrade your plan each month, so if you do find you’re going over your data limit regularly, you can easily increase your allowance.

In fact, you could upgrade to the next tier of Virgin’s pricing tariff and still be paying less than you would with any other provider. £40 a month gets you 5GB of data and 1,500 minutes with unlimited texts.

No upfront fees on the iPhone X with Sky and Tesco

By way of a comparison, let’s have a look at the two other providers we know will give you an iPhone X without you having to pay anything upfront.

Technically Sky Mobile will also let you have an iPhone X for £37 a month but this doesn’t include any data, calls or texts – just the handset on a two-and-a-half year contract – so isn’t really a fair comparison to make.

To add 500MB of data will cost an extra £5 a month, taking us to £42 in total. Adding 1GB of data would be £10 a month. Unlimited texts and calls will cost you another tenner on top of that unless you’re a Sky TV customer, in which case they’re free. The alternative is to pay 10p per minute and 10p per text on a ‘pay as you use’ basis.

There’s a lot of variables thanks to the way Sky structures its mobile deals, but the rough equivalent of Virgin’s £37 a month package would cost £57 a month (1GB, unlimited calls and texts).

The only other provider offering the iPhone X without an upfront fee is Tesco Mobile, where prices start at £61.86 a month. Of this monthly price, £46.86 goes towards paying off the handset and the other £15 gets you 4GB of data, 3,000 minutes and 5,000 texts.
