Virgin Media offers customers a free upgrade to its 4K-ready TV V6 set top box
New customers always get the best stuff, right? Wrong! Virgin Media is offering existing customers a totally free upgrade to its 4K-ready set-top box V6 box.
It is offering the V6 box, which it now provides to new customers as standard, to its existing users at no extra cost.
Like the TiVO box, you will be able to pause, rewind and record live TV. But the V6 offers more storage, at 1TB compared with 500GB on the TiVo box, giving you .
It also allows people to record six programmes while watching a seventh recording or streaming from services such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix. In comparison, TiVo users can only record three shows at once.
The actual box is half the size of its TiVo predecessor, leaving more room on your TV stand for coffee cups and other paraphernalia.
Customers even get an app so you can watch recorded programmes while on the move. There is no need for a new contract and you won’t have to pay the previous £20 activation fee for the box.
Virgin Media says customers will be able to install the box themselves so you may not need an engineer bringing their muddy boots into your lounge. There is a £40 charge if you did want to get an engineer to come and install it, so it is worth trying yourself first.
You must be a fibre customer to get the upgrade
Customers can request the upgrade through their online account. There is one catch though, you must also be a Virgin fibre broadband customer to get this upgrade.
You won’t be able to upgrade if you get your TV through Virgin but broadband elsewhere or if you are on older Virgin internet services.
Virgin Media has said it will upgrade existing broadband customers to fibre for free but this may result in higher monthly bills.
Virgin Media broadband deals start at £27. For this, you can get VIVID 50 fibre broadband with speeds of up to 50Mbps and unlimited downloads on a 12-month contract. You can double your download speed to 100Mbps for £32 a month or get 200Mbps for £42 a month. New Virgin Media customers get the new box as standard.
Its Player Bundle offers VIVID 50 fibre broadband with free weekend calls for £33 a month. You get more than 70 Freeview channels as well as the iPlayer, 4OD, ITVPlayer and Netflix apps, although you will need to pay any subscriptions.
The Virgin Media Mix TV bundle has broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps. You get Freeview channels as well as premium channels including Sky One, Sky Living and FOX for £45 a month.
This bundle will also give you Sky Sports Mix, which shows a range of sporting events from around the world including the occasional Premier League football match.
For faster speeds, the Full House package offers all the above plus up to 100Mbps, more than 230 digital channels and 50 in HD including BT Sport and the Disney Channel. This will cost £55 a month.
Those wanting to combine entertainment, sports and films can get Sky Sports HD, Sky Cinema HD plus more than 260 channels with the VIP bundle. It promises up to 300Mbps broadband for £88 a month.
All deals come on a 12-month contract with free weekend calls and a £20 activation fee for new customers.
