Virgin says record customer growth is down to its 'unrivalled' broadband
Virgin Media has reported record customer growth in the last quarter, driven partly by demand for its broadband bundles.
The company's results for the three months ending 30 September show that 42,000 customers signed up to the provider in the quarter – the highest gain recorded in those three months since Virgin Media was created in 2007.
The company added 67,500 subscriptions in the UK, 55,500 of which were for broadband.
And more than half of new broadband customers chose speeds of 100Mbps plus.
The provider has previously announced that it is increasing its top speed to 200Mbps, and from last month customers taking its 50Mbps, 100Mbps and 152Mbps could opt-in to higher speeds of 70Mbps, 150Mbps and 200Mbps.
The new speeds are expected to be available to 90% of our customers in the UK by the end of the year.
The company said its £3m Project Lightning, which is connecting 4m UK premises to ultrafast broadband, is on track after being launched in Manchester, Leeds and Nottingham so far.
Virgin’s recently-launched scheme to offer ultrafast broadband to 3,000 businesses in Manchester’s Tech City has had a positive response, it said, with the first customers in the process of being connected.
It has announced a new 300Mbps service for business customers and also recently launched a scheme to offer free broadband installation to small businesses following the closure of the government’s voucher scheme.
The company has also launched its first Smart WiFi pavement trial in Chesham, giving people wi-fi literally under their feel.
According to the latest quarter's results, subscriptions to Virgin's next generation TV services – TiVo in the UK and Horizon TV in Ireland - grew from 91,000 during Q2 to 102,000 in Q3.
It also added new mobile subscribers, driven by the success of its Freestyle tariff, which allows you to upgrade and downgrade your tariff on a monthly basis, and also to pay off your handset separately.
As its latest quarterly results were published, Virgin Media CEO Tom Mockridge said: “Virgin Media delivered a strong performance during the quarter and our best Q3 customer growth since Virgin Media was formed in 2007.
“As we invest to grow Virgin Media we’re building real momentum: connecting more homes and businesses, attracting and retaining more customers.
“Alongside this we are delivering unrivalled services, with the launch of Vivid ultrafast broadband speeds up to 200Mbps for consumers and 300Mbps for business.”
