Virgin's network expansion boosts fibre broadband options in York

Wednesday, October 19th 2016 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Virgin Media is extending its fibre broadband network to cover 20,000 homes and businesses in York.

The expansion is part of Project Lightning, a £3bn investment by the provider in its UK network.

Virgin is promising speeds of up to 200Mbps for residential customers and up to 300Mbps for businesses and home workers.

The new network is far from the first built in York to offer superfast speeds, as most parts of the city can access BT’s fibre to the cabinet technology that gets you 24Mbps – depending how far you are from the cabinet.

Some parts of York that haven’t been upgraded to fibre by BT are able to get Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO), a joint venture between Sky, TalkTalk and infrastructure provider CityFibre.

The fibre to the premises service has connected thousands of homes in the Huntington, Rawcliffe, Clifton and the Groves areas of the city and give residents speeds up to 940Mbps.

Councillor Ian Gillies, York City Council’s executive member for transport and planning, is happy with the amount of choice York residents will have.

“Faster broadband brings many benefits for York residents and businesses,” he said.

“The council is pleased that broadband options in York are growing and that investments into the digital infrastructure are being made.”

Karen Ingham, regional director for the north east at Virgin Media, said: “It’s official – York has struck broadband and entertainment gold.

“Residents will soon be getting the high-speed connectivity and top-notch TV they deserve.

“We urge residents to come together and register their interest – your street could be next.”

Exclusive discounts

Communities that can’t currently access Virgin services are being encouraged to register their interest with the company at virginmedia.com/cablemystreet.

Earlier this year, Virgin announced plans to improve broadband connections in new-build homes as part of a partnership with the Home Builders Federation.

It launched a dedicated new-build portal on its website including technical guidance and a simple site request form.

It also pledged to carry out all initial new site assessments free of charge and will offer exclusive discounts to homeowners moving into properties included in the scheme.
