Vodafone's gigabit broadband rollout targets Scotland, the Midlands and West Yorkshire

Wednesday, April 25th 2018 by Oprah Flash

Parts of the Midlands, Scotland and West Yorkshire have been chosen by Vodafone and CityFibre collectively, to receive ultrafast, gigabit-capable full fibre broadband.

Coventry, Edinburgh, Huddersfield and Stirling are the latest cities to be named for the rollout, following an announcement in January that Milton Keynes will receive download speeds up to 1000Mbps, followed by Peterborough.

This forms part of a gigabit broadband programme into which CityFibre has invested more than £315 million in a bid to improve connectivity to more than half a million homes and businesses across seven cities.

The ball (or cable) is already rolling in Milton Keynes and work will start everywhere else in the coming months.

In November last year, CityFibre and Vodafone joined forces in a strategic partnership with the aim of providing fibre to the premises (FTTP) broadband to five million homes and businesses by 2025.

'World leading digital centre'

Vodafone UK chief executive Nick Jeffery said: “I’m delighted to welcome everyone living in Coventry, Edinburgh, Huddersfield and Stirling to the full fibre club, with a broadband service like no other.

"After five months we are well on track with the joint Gigafast broadband programme that will help position the UK as a world leading digital centre.”

On the other side of the partnership CityFibre, which is supplying the infrastructure, says its aim is to totally transform the cities mentioned. Fibre optic cables are being used for each stage of the connection, so not only will you be able to do more on the internet and much quicker, the service will also be more reliable.

Greg Mesch, chief executive at CityFibre, said: “Our commitment, in partnership with Vodafone, is to totally transform each city in which we roll out by bringing ubiquitous full fibre to everyone and we are well on our way.”

Speaking on how this development will affect residents in Coventry, West Midlands mayor Andy Street said: “Fast internet is vital for a modern economy. Businesses need to communicate quickly and share data around the world.

“But in the West Midlands we have a mixed picture, with some of the fastest speeds and some of the slowest. I am really pleased that Coventry is to become the focus of the next Vodafone and CityFibre rollout.”
