Vodafone installs 4G mobile network at Reading train station

Friday, May 25th 2018 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Vodafone has installed 4G at Reading train station and has taken 4G mobile coverage to 99% across the town as a whole.

Reading station one of the UK's busiest rail hubs outside London and welcomes about 20 million passengers a years – and now Vodafone customers can benefit from superfast data speeds and reliable voice coverage throughout.

4G has also been made available to 99% of Reading, both by geographical area and by population. Residents of nearby villages Tilehurst, Lower Earley, Sonning and Spencers Wood are also benefiting from improved mobile connectivity, as is the Green Park business park.

Vodafone said customers are already using their mobile devices to get online more than ever before. The provider has recorded a 61% increase in the amount of 4G data traffic carried across its network in the area compared to this time last year.

As well as increasing capacity and boosting data speeds on its network, Vodafone has also introduced 4G calling in Reading, allowing customers to make calls using 4G for a better signal.

'Key commercial centre'

Recent investments have also laid the foundations for the rollout of 5G – the next generation of mobile network – in the coming years.

Scott Petty, chief technology officer at Vodafone UK, said: “Reading is a key commercial centre and our customers deserve world-class mobile connectivity to match the town’s growing economic importance and predicted population growth.

“We are committed to delivering the best possible connectivity across Reading, throughout Berkshire, as well as the wider country.”

In April, Vodafone announced that it had installed 4G throughout Heathrow airport, as well as on the Heathrow Express trains that run to and from Paddington Station.

“Heathrow is an extremely important hub for our millions of customers worldwide, whether they are travelling on holiday or on business,” said Mr Petty.

“This major improvement is part of our multi-billion investment programme to build our strongest UK network. It will give customers great coverage from the moment they step on or off their flight, to traveling on the Heathrow Express.”
