Vodafone invests in 3G and 4G mobile coverage in Portsmouth

Vodafone has announced a multi-million pound investment in its 3G and 4G networks in Portsmouth.

The move will take the operator's 3G and 4G coverage in the town to 98%, improving both indoor and outdoor signal.

Vodafone has already seen huge growth in mobile data traffic in Portsmouth following improvements made to its network last year.

Customers in the town now use about 1.5TB of data each day – the equivalent of streaming the film adaptation of Les Misérables, which features Portsmouth’s historic dockyard – 1,500 times.

The network upgrade forms part of the £1bn investment Vodafone is making in its network and services across the country this year.

All Vodafone masts in Portsmouth will have been upgraded by the end of this year, but customers are already benefitting from network improvements.

4G data usage is increasing month-on-month and the average data traffic a week in Portsmouth is equal to browsing the internet for 420,000 hours – or nearly 50 years.

Additionally, the recent strengthening of Vodafone’s 3G network across the city has also provided greater coverage, High Definition Voice technology for voice calls, and faster mobile internet services to more consumers and businesses.


Vodafone started to rollout broadband and home phone services across the UK earlier this summer.

The company is offering broadband packages with speeds up to 76Mbps, hoping to build on the success of its fixed broadband services across 12 countries in Europe, where it has more than 11m subscribers.

Customers within reach of Vodafone’s fibre network are able to add broadband and home phone services to their mobile package, meaning they get one bill for all three services.
