Vodafone using wi-fi to help customers chat ‘for longer and in many more places’

Monday, September 14th 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

Vodafone customers will soon be able to make and receive calls even when they do not have a mobile signal – as long as they are connected to wi-fi.

Wi-fi calling is being rolled out over the next few weeks on a number of the latest smartphones.

The free service will be available to any pay monthly customer on a Vodafone Red bundle with a compatible handset.

There is no need to navigate through an app and customers can call numbers on any network.

Vodafone UK consumer director Cindy Rose said: “Our wi-fi calling service allows customers to talk to loved ones, friends and colleagues for longer and in many more places. It is easy to use and doesn’t cost a penny more.

“It works wherever a customer is connected to wi-fi – in a café, at home or the office – and automatically connects just like a normal call when a mobile signal is weak or non-existent.

“Vodafone wi-fi calling is a great match for Vodafone Broadband, our new superfast home broadband offering.

“Its special beam-forming technology ensures that a strong signal follows your phone wherever you take it around your home.

“Vodafone wi-fi calling is one of a series of future voice services we are launching for our customers over the next few months.”

Network coverage

Cable.co.uk reported earlier this year that Vodafone had been testing wi-fi calling in its network laboratories alongside another new technology – Voice over LTE, which carries voice calls over 4G instead of 2G or 3G as networks currently do.

The operator has also been giving rural communities mobile coverage for the first time through its Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS) programme.

Vodafone’s £2bn investment programme during 2014 and 2015 is focused on improving indoor and outdoor network coverage in the UK, and mobile internet access to more communities and businesses.

This has already seen 4G extended to 626 cities, towns and districts as well as thousands of smaller communities across the UK, giving more than 70% of the population access to Vodafone’s 4G network.

Last week, Vodafone announced a multi-million pound investment in Portsmouth that will take the town’s 3G and 4G coverage to 98%.
