What we know about the LG G7 ThinQ ahead of its launch
The LG G7 ThinQ smartphone will be officially unveiled next week with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) and a design that could be remarkably similar to the iPhone X.
The successor to the LG G6 will be shown off at events in New York on 2 May and in the Korean capital of Seoul a day later. It is the first LG ‘G’ series device to adopt the ‘ThinQ’ moniker, which is used by the company for consumer electronics, home appliances and services that make use of AI.
The first LG device to be labelled as such was the LG V30S, which debuted at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona earlier this year, complete with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, an OLED display and AI-powered imaging features.
LG says the G7 will build on this foundation, promising AI features that are actually useful to consumers. “Now is the time when manufacturers have to pay close attention to what customers actually need and want for their smartphones,” said Hwang Jeong-hwan, president of LG Mobile.
“With the LG G7 ThinQ, LG is continuing to deliver on its promise to enhance core technologies to meet customers’ real life needs by incorporating AI technologies that are more than features, they are part of the user experience.”
‘G’ series devices were once among the most popular Android devices, especially the G3, catapulting LG into third place in the global market behind Apple and Samsung. However the company has fallen behind in recent years and hopes AI will allow its devices to stand out from the competition.
Several leaks have given us an idea of what the G7 will look like. Renowned mobile leaker Evan Blass has posted images suggesting the device will have thin bezels, an OLED display and iPhone X-style notch.

The power button could be on the side rather than integrated into the rear fingerprint sensor, while another leak claims there will be a button specifically for the AI-powered Google Assistant as well as specific LG commands. Also expect AI to find its way into the camera and the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor to give the device extra power.
The LG G6 is still available from all four mobile operators, with Three offering a 32GB edition with 8GB of data, unlimited texts and calls for £27 a month and no upfront cost if you take out a two-year contract.
EE and Vodafone will give you 1GB of data, unlimited texts and calls for £18 a month, but the former will only charge you £109 upfront while the latter will require £149.
