York's Huntington and Groves areas among first to get ultrafast fibre broadband

Friday, August 28th 2015 by Phil Wilkinson-Jones

The Huntington and Groves areas of York will be among the first to get ultrafast fibre broadband from Sky and TalkTalk.

Residents and businesses in the two areas voted resoundingly in favour of getting the new Ultra Fibre Optic service, which offers speeds up to 1,000Mbps.

As well as giving residents speeds up to 100 times faster than standard broadband, the providers say ultrafast will future-proof York’s broadband network so it can easily keep up with future demand and rapidly-growing data consumption.

In casting their votes, local residents could also nominate a good cause in the community to benefit from a free connection to the Ultra Fibre Optic service.

The winning good causes will be announced by Sky and TalkTalk in the next few weeks.

Huntington and Groves join Clifton and Rawcliffe in becoming the first places to benefit from Ultra Fibre Optic, which is being offered by the two providers working together with infrastructure provider CityFibre to build a fibre network for the city.

The announcement comes as a survey by fellow provider Hyperoptic revealed how much importance Brits put on ultrafast broadband when it comes to moving home.

New pricing model

The survey found that people would spend £14,000 more for a house with an ultrafast connection, with 67% rating the service as more important than having good neighbours.

TalkTalk has already announced that it will offer Ultra Fibre Optic for the same price as its standard broadband.

It will also use a new pricing model that will see customers pay an all-in monthly price instead of separate service and line rental costs.

TalkTalk CEO Dido Harding said: “The UK has lived with broadband infrastructure that has suffered significant underinvestment for too long.

“We lag well behind the rest of Europe when it comes to rolling out pure, ultrafast, fibre networks.

“We have the potential to become the world’s leading digital economy, but we need this kind of investment in superior fibre infrastructure to make this a reality.

“Ultra Fibre Optic will revolutionise the broadband experience in York by giving consumers and businesses access to all the speed and bandwidth they could ever need, at an affordable price, futureproofing the city and making York better off.”
