YouView to launch second-screen app in autumn
Richard Halton of YouView has unveiled plans for a second-screen app at this year's IBC conference.
YouView is set to launch a second-screen app in the coming weeks, the broadband-connected TV service's chief executive Richard Halton has revealed.
Speaking at the IBC 2012 conference, Mr Halton said the mobile and tablet app will be available this autumn and is designed to deliver "a set of different objectives".
According to Broadcast, the application is likely to allow YouView customers to control the service while they are away from the house and will guarantee speed by connecting directly with the set-top box.
Mr Halton claimed most second-screen apps are "a bit ahead of where the mainstream is" and stressed YouView is consequently keen not to introduce too many advances in this field straightaway.
In the same speech, he went on to hit out at critics who claimed YouView was late to market.
Many analysts argued the service had missed the boat after debuting this summer, rather than in 2010 as originally planned.
However, Mr Halton noted YouView has become the launch platform for some content services - such as Sky's Now TV and Channel 5's Milkshake.
"The lack of UK penetration to date of Apple and Google also gives a clue that we are not behind," he added.
