How to compare Sky fibre optic broadband packages

Thinking of joining Sky fibre? Then you’re in the right place. Here’s exactly how you compare deals.

We’ve made comparing broadband deals simple and straightforward. Our Sky fibre optic broadband deals are listed by price. The cheapest is at the top but you can reorganise these deals by using the ‘sort by’ option. Click the deal name to find more information. Once you’ve chosen, click on the blue ‘see deal’ button to the right to be taken to Sky’s website where you can finish the sign-up process.

Currently, just over half the UK population can get Sky fibre broadband. Find out if you can access Sky’s fibre services by entering your postcode in the availability checker at the top of the page.

Instead of scouring the small print yourself, here are all the important details so you can see exactly what to look out for.

Click the deal’s name before you sign up to find out exactly what’s included. Some packages come with TV and home phone plans, while others do not. Download speed is another variable. You can also select the pricing tab in the deal’s information window to see the annual price of the service.

Some Sky fibre broadband deals are subject to installation fees. This can significantly add to your first month’s payment. Another small fee to watch out for is router delivery.

All payments must be made via Direct Debit. Sky will set this up for you when you sign up with your details. You can’t pay for any Sky service in any other way.

Why choose Sky fibre optic broadband?

Sky Fibre is a fibre optic broadband service from one of the most trusted names in the UK telecommunications market. There are some great reasons to join, from the download and upload speeds through to the price. We’ve listed three of the best.

Truly unlimited usage

All Sky fibre broadband plans come with unlimited, unmetered usage. You can download and upload as much as you like, as often as you like, and you’ll never be penalised. Even better, there’s no traffic management, so speeds won’t be slowed during peak hours.

High download speeds

Sky fibre broadband comes in two speeds. Sky Fibre is the cheaper of the two, with an average speed of 36Mbps. This is ideal for those who want to download and stream HD videos and movies. If you want more, Sky Fibre Max boasts a download rate averaging 58Mbps. This gives you much more bandwidth for streaming, downloading, browsing, and gaming online.

The option to bundle with TV and phone

If you want Sky TV or Sky home phone, you can add them to your Sky fibre broadband package. Bundling is a great way to save money and also means you only have to deal with one provider should anything go awry in future.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Truly unlimited usage
  • High download speeds
  • TV and home phone bundles available

Cons

  • Availability is limited
  • An 18-month contract applies
  • No line rental saver option

Which deal is right for me?

Two speeds are available with Sky fibre broadband, averaging 36Mbps and 58Mbps. In some cases, your actual speed will be a little slower than this in practice, but it will still be faster than traditional copper-cabled broadband.

Sky Fibre Max is great for heavy downloaders

Sky’s fastest fibre optic package is designed for those who love to make the most of their broadband connection. If you and others in your household frequently download and stream high definition films, or if you enjoy downloading videogames to your new console, then Sky Fibre Max will guarantee a solid, reliable connection.

Sky Fibre is ideal for streaming movies

This entry-level plan is best for smaller households. You can still download and stream HD movies and play games online – not to mention the everyday tasks of browsing and emailing – but you won’t be able to have several people doing all these things at once.

What will I need?

There are a couple of necessities to signing up for Sky Fibre. Before you decide on a deal, be doubly certain that you’ve taken the following points into consideration.

You need to be in an area covered by Sky

Sky Fibre isn’t available everywhere. Sky relies on the Openreach network to supply its fibre services – along with BT, TalkTalk, and other providers. Use our availability checker at the top of the page to see if you’re covered by Sky.

You have to sign up to an 18-month contract

All Sky fibre products must be taken on an 18-month contract. Before you sign up, make sure that you can afford the monthly payments for the full term of the contract. If you cancel before the 18-month minimum period you may be hit with termination fees.

How do I switch?

Now you’re ready to compare and choose a deal. Here are the main steps involved in switching to a Sky Fibre deal.

Choose the right deal

There are several deals available. Make sure you know exactly what you want before you choose, and click the deal’s name to see if you’re getting the right content. Once you’ve chosen a deal, click on the blue ‘see deal’ button to the right of the deal to be taken to Sky’s website. This allows you to customise and complete your order.

Sky will often taken care of cancellation for you

Once you’ve signed up to Sky Fibre, you don’t need to contact your old provider to cancel. Sky will do this on your behalf, and will send you a letter once it’s done to tell you what has and hasn’t changed. If you’re moving from Virgin Media to Sky, things are a little different. In this case you do need to contact Virgin to cancel. All this takes is a quick phone call and you’re done.

Watch out for termination fees

If you’re within contract with your previous service you’ll have to pay termination fees in order to cancel. If you’re into your contract by only a couple of months you may end up paying hundreds of pounds to leave. If this is the case, it might be better to wait until your contract has expired.

Cable recommends

Fast broadband is great for heavy users and large families. But if you just want to browse, watch a few videos, surf Facebook and send emails, you may find that a slower broadband connection might be better suited. If you’d like to compare Sky’s slower broadband packages instead of fibre, take a look at our Sky Broadband comparison page.
