Cable.co.uk takes reviewing broadband seriously. Splitting each broadband review by speed, usage, call plan, extras, value for money, equipment and installation, we employ impartiality and a thorough research ethic to destroy the jargon and demystify the small print.
Cable.co.uk is currently the only website in the world producing in-depth reviews of UK broadband products. We define ourselves by them – their quality, fairness, thoroughness — and have no qualms in telling you who's not offering you the broadband deal you deserve.
Cable.co.uk is a team of consumer telecoms experts committed to helping you make the right choice. Whether that means finding the cheapest, fastest or most reliable broadband, we’ve got you covered. Our comparison tools are approved by Ofcom – the independent UK telecoms regulator. That means we have your interests at heart, not ours, and certainly not those of UK telecoms providers.
Each broadband review is honest, because we hold ourselves to unusually high standards of impartiality and fairness. If we think something is good, we’ll tell you, if we think it's just not good enough, we'll say exactly that, and every shade in between.
We approach our reviews as consumers, killing jargon dead and focusing on what the package means to you. Not sure what you can do with a 38Mbps fibre optic connection? We’ll tell you. Don’t know the difference between dual and single-band wi-fi? We’ll tell you. Clarity is as important to us as it is to you.
We score each section on how well we feel it performs compared to all the other products on the UK market, with a combination of these scores making up the overall rating. When we score a package, we take our time to ensure it ranks accurately against its competitors.
Speed is a major factor when you’re choosing a broadband package. No exact speed is guaranteed – there will always be a disparity between what a provider offers and what a provider delivers. That’s why we describe the speed as ‘up to’, as this figure is usually the maximum speed available, and is only available to a small percentage of customers.
To help you understand what you’ll be able to do with a product, each broadband review includes a speed-o-meter graphic. This displays the advertised and actual speeds you can expect from the package, and what you can and can't do with that many megabits.
This measures what you can do with the advertised ‘up to’ speed of the package in question.
This measures what you can do with the average speed of the package. This speed is measured by Ofcom.
Only achievable for the faster fibre optic speeds.
Might prove difficult for ADSL broadband and just on the cusp for low level fibre optic.
Should be achievable with a good connection from a standard ADSL broadband package.
Still a low level activity that should be achievable from the majority of broadband.
Low-level internet usage. Even very slow internet connections should let you do this.
Almost the bare minimum for broadband, every package should at least achieve this.
