BT Broadband Premium for business review

With any business broadband package, it’s important to have the right technical support and BT is offering a package that is tailored around this. BT Broadband Premium offers 24/7 support, a four-hour response time and aims to get faults repaired by the next working day. Plus, it will monitor all your security for you.

This package comes with a speed of up to 17Mbps, unlimited usage and the option to add a static IP address, but is this the right package for your business?

This package comes with a download speed of 17Mbps and unlimited usage. But the shining star is the technical support. BT offers a high level of support, but unfortunately it comes at a cost.

Speed & usage

Rating

2

This standard broadband package comes with a download speed of up to 17Mbps, which will allow you to comfortably meet the demands of a dozen computers or devices. Although it isn’t the fastest speed available, it is sufficient to handle the requirements of a small business, including basic online activity like file sharing, emailing and downloading. Plus, with unlimited usage, you will be able to download as much as you like without any restrictions.

However, the major drawback is the upload speed of up to 1Mbps, which can slow things right down, especially if you tend to upload a lot of files and rely on VoIP services like Skype to conduct meetings with clients. If this is the case, you may want to consider a package that offers a higher upload speed.

It is worth noting that BT operates a traffic management policy, meaning you will be slowed down during peak time to ensure there is consistent speed across the network.

Technical support

Rating

5

BT’s technical support is the shining star of this package. It offers peace of mind with 24/7 technical support, a four-hour response time and aims to repair any faults by the next working day. It also gives you advanced support with BT Tech Heads, which allows BT to support up to three computers. It will also organise secure remote access to help diagnose and solve any technical faults, so you won’t have to hire any additional staff to do the hard work. If you have more than three computers, you can add them to the Tech Heads support programme too.

You can also secure your server by purchasing IT Support Manager for PCs and Servers at an additional monthly cost. BT’s experts will set up your server and continue to support you with any technical faults.

For advanced security, you can stay protected with PC Security. It includes a firewall, anti-spyware, anti-virus software and protection for your email. You can discuss further options for security and support with a BT adviser over the phone.

Extras

Rating

3

As well as public wi-fi, BT offers quite a few extras that are valuable to any business. Static IPs are useful, especially when you are running your own website and server, setting up your own secure Virtual Private Network or accessing your computer from a remote area. You can add up to 13 static IP addresses for an additional monthly fee.

This package also comes with a licence for Microsoft Office 365 Small Business. This allows you to collaborate with colleagues no matter where you are by accessing documents and emails stored online. This is compatible with many devices including PCs, Macs, tablets, laptops and smartphones.

You can get Broadband Premium with or without a call plan. However, if you choose to purchase a call plan your monthly cost will increase.

Value for money

Rating

2

This package is available on either 12-month or 24-month contracts. Although the 12-month contract offers more flexibility, the 24-month contract is marginally cheaper. There is a line rental charge to be factored in, and you may be charged for installation. The Hub 3 router is also subject to a delivery charge.

There are additional costs to consider, including Static IP addresses, a call plan and advanced technical support, should you require them, so the overall cost can quickly mount up.

Equipment & installation

Rating

BT Broadband Premium comes with the BT Hub 3 router. This works well if you have standard broadband, but not so much with fibre packages. It offers a reliable wireless signal, which will support several devices and computers. If you own a retail store, salon, café or restaurant, customers can also access your wi-fi network on their smartphones or tablets, but on a separate, secure channel. It's designed to detect and avoid any wi-fi interference, providing you with the best possible signal. If you want a better connection, you can upgrade your router, at a cost, to the Hub 5, which supplies a stronger signal.

It’s worth remembering that the initial installation charge will be levied regardless of whether an engineer needs to visit your property or not. The cost covers a phone line, network planning and technical work in the exchange.

Overall Rating

BT Broadband Premium is ideal for businesses that rely heavily on technical support. Although the speed isn’t the fastest available, it is sufficient for a small business. This package is all about good technical support, but all the extra costs will bump up the monthly cost.
