BT Broadband for business review

BT is the UK’s most popular telecoms provider and offers several business broadband packages. With five million wi-fi hotspots scattered around the country, you’ll have the freedom to work in or out the office.

BT Broadband for business is the basic entry-level package and comes with a speed of up to 17Mbps, a 10GB usage limit and the option to add a static IP address. But is it right for your business? Here’s everything you need to know.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
2.6

This package comes with a download speed of up to 17Mbps and valuable technical support. But the major flaw is the 10GB data allowance and the various extra costs. If you are a small business this package may suffice, but before you commit, it may be worth shopping around to see what other broadband providers can offer.

Speed & usage

Rating

1

This package comes with a download speed of 17Mbps, which is adequate for a small business. This will allow you to connect a dozen devices or computers to the network. However it does come with a 10GB usage limit, which is barely sufficient for home users, let alone businesses. This usage will restrict your online activity to emailing and light browsing, and if you exceed it you will incur extra charges. If you are worried about exceeding the limit then it may be worth looking at other packages that offer unlimited data.

The upload speed of up to 1Mbps isn’t anything to rave about. If your company relies heavily on VoIP services, such as Skype, to conduct meetings with clients in UK and abroad, it may be better to invest in a package with a higher upload speed.

This BT broadband deal operates a traffic management policy. However, it will only slow you down if you are file sharing during peak times. This is operated on weekdays during 5pm to 12pm and at weekends during 9am to 12pm.

Technical support

Rating

4

To ensure the smooth running of a business it’s vital to have valuable technical support. BT offers peace of mind with BT Prompt Care. It includes 24/7 technical support, a four-hour response time, and aims to repair any faults by the end of the next working day. If BT is late in repairing a fault, you can claim a one-off service level credit of £25. If you want your fault fixed within 24 hours, you can upgrade to the Total Care package at an additional cost.

For advanced security, you can stay protected with BT Business. This software comes at an additional cost and includes a firewall, anti-spyware, anti-virus software and protection for your email.

Extras

Rating

3

BT offers quite a few extras that are indispensable to any business. Static IP addresses are available for an extra monthly fee. They are useful for running your own website, setting up your own secure Virtual Private Network and even running CCTV off your network. BT also offers five million UK hotspots, so you don’t always have to be cooped up in an office; you can use public wi-fi to access your server and get online when you are away from your desk. You’ll also get access to 10 email addresses.

BT Broadband for business features a so-called value line phone plan as standard. It features capped call rates, which vary depending on which contract length you choose and help to keep spending under control. If you prefer a set call allowance each month, it might be worth considering one of the more advanced BT broadband plans, which have the option of standard or premium phone packages.

Value for money

Rating

2

BT Broadband for business is pretty expensive for such a limited data allowance and the costs stack up further if you want a better router, more IT support and a static IP address. The cheapest option comes with a 24-month contract, which might be too much of a commitment for new small businesses just getting off the ground. Another major snag is the prices advertised might not be the price you actually pay, as rates vary depending on location. You can find out which pricing category you fall into via the availability checker on BT’s website.

If you need a new phone line, expect to pay over £100 to have one installed. A basic BT Hub 3 router is included as standard (+ £8 delivery), which is fine for standard broadband but inadequate should you ever upgrade to faster fibre broadband in future. If this is a possibility, you can upgrade to the Hub 5 during the sign-up process.

Equipment & installation

Rating

3

This BT Business Hub provides a strong and reliable wireless signal and uses smart wireless technology to detect wi-fi interferences. It comes with wi-fi Protected Setup that allows you to set up a secure wireless connection. It’s easy to set up and you’ll receive a user guide to help you get connected. Plus, the Hub is environmentally friendly. It runs on half the power of an energy-efficient light bulb and automatically changes its mode to low power when it’s not connected.

Installation charges may apply depending on the type of phone line and contract length you may require. You'll be charged £120 for a new line or reactivating your existing line. Or you'll be charged £35 for BT taking over a working line. However, there is no charge for switching from another provider.

Overall Rating

2.6

BT’s entry–level business package is ideal for light browsing and emailing. But the major drawback is the 10GB usage limit. It may be enough for a small business, but larger businesses will need to invest in a package that has a higher speed and unlimited usage. BT’s technical support is the shining star, but when you take the extra costs into account, you may want to reconsider.
