BT Infinity for business review

BT Infinity for business packs a download speed of up to 38Mbps into either a 12-month or 24-month contract. Although it is the slower of BT’s business fibre broadband packages, if you’re looking for something to keep your small business connected to the rest of the world this might be just what you need.

With a decent speed, good customer support and access to static IPs, BT Infinity for business makes a decent case for itself, but is it worth choosing the 50GB usage limit to save a bit of cash or should you go unlimited?

Cable.co.uk overall rating
2.9

This package comes with good speed and a great router, but the limited version might impede activity. If you’re willing to pay for the unlimited package and a few additional features, this is a decent fibre optic broadband package with a good support structure.

Speed & usage

Rating

2.5

With 38Mbps you should be able to carry out a decent amount of tasks simultaneously, including keeping multiple wi-fi enabled devices (such as tablets, smartphones and laptops) supplied too. The package also comes with a solid 9.5Mbps upload speed, so sending and sharing files over the connection and using VoIP services (such as Skype) should be fairly nippy too.

The real problem here is the data cap on the cheaper package. Although 50GB may be adequate for some businesses, it probably won’t last as long as you might imagine. If your office downloads a lot of large files on a regular basis you might crunch through the monthly allowance pretty quickly. The punishment for breaking through your 50GB is problematic too, with £37.50 being the maximum you could be charged if you go over your allowance by 65GB. If you feel you’ll need more data each month, you may want to consider an unlimited package.

Technical support

Rating

3

If your business is reliant on a strong connection, the moment you have a fault and the router lights go out is the moment the money stops rolling in. On Infinity, BT offers 24/7 broadband support, which aims to fix any problem you may encounter by the end of the next working day – unless a specific appointment date is agreed.

If you’re looking for technical support when something goes wrong, IT support for PCs, Macs, smartphones, tablets, servers and software is available at an extra cost. You'll get help and guidance without having to hire any extra IT experts. It also helps with virus removal and operating systems.

Extras

Rating

3

There isn’t a vast amount of extras offered on this package, but what is here seems to be quite useful. You can add a static IP address for an additional cost, which are worth consideration if you’re planning on running your own email server, you run your own website or want to set up a secure Virtual Private Network. You also get access to BT’s network of five million wi-fi hotspots.

There are also call packages that can be added to your deal if you’re interested in a phone line with your broadband. Plus, there are a raft of call features that can be added to your call plan, including caller display and call barring, which can all be bought in a money saving bundle.

Value for money

Rating

The monthly cost of the deal may not seem particularly high, but charges do stack up when you build your package. There’s an £8 postage charge for your included wireless router and if you’re taking a phone line with your broadband, you may be charged up to £120 for installation. A single static IP address will cost around a fiver per month, with concessions for buying in a bulk of five or 13.

BT Infinity business broadband is available on a 12 or 24-month contract. The monthly costs are slightly higher on a 12-month contract but the shorter commitment may suit some small businesses. If you’re looking to pay less each month, the 24-month contract may be suitable but it’s worth making certain that it’s right for your business before signing up. With charges attached to going over the 50GB allowance, BT Infinity Unlimited is worth considering if your business is especially active online.

Equipment & installation

Rating

BT supply the BT Business Hub free of charge, but for an £8 delivery fee. The Business Hub provides a strong wireless signal that detects and avoids wi-f interference. It is easy to set up and can be used as a wi-fi hotspot by your customers, using a different channel to your PC, so everything is kept nice and secure.

If you’re having a phone line installed you will be charged a one off fee of up to £120. BT charges this to cover the cost of network planning, technical developments and engineering work on street-level, so you should be prepared for an initial payment when you sign up.

Overall Rating

2.9

BT have created a fairly standard business fibre broadband package which looks to be tremendously good value at first, but requires additional extras to pull it into something workable. It has a solid level of tech support and should be fast enough to keep small businesses chugging along, but larger enterprises might want something faster and/or unlimited.
