Speed & usage

Rating

4

This is the fastest business broadband package widely offered by BT. It comes with a 76Mbps fibre optic broadband connection, which should be fast enough to keep a number of devices connected to the internet, giving each person enough bandwidth to browse, send large files, use VoIP services and even stream HD videos. You also get a 19Mbps upload speed, which is great if your business sends large emails or uploads large files.

This package comes with unlimited usage. This will allow you to download as much as you like without any restrictions. However, BT operates a traffic management policy to ensure consistent speed across the network. In other words, you will be slowed down during peak times; on weekdays between 5pm–12pm and at weekends between 9am–12pm. However you will only be slowed down if you carry out any peer-to-peer activities.

Technical support

Rating

4

BT is aware that if your business is reliant on its internet connection, you’ll be looking for assurances that it can fix any problems you have along the way. It offers a service called Prompt Care to its business customers for free, which promises to solve any issues you’re having by the end of the following day. This is quite a declaration and is certainly reassuring. If the fault is not cleared, you can claim £25 from its Customer Service Compensation Scheme, which is a nice little bonus – although probably not enough to cover any loss of productivity.

BT’s Tech Heads support service is also included with the package. This is a round-the-clock technical support team that helps with all sorts of IT-related issues you might be having. This extra support will give you the peace of mind you need to get on with your day.

Extras

Rating

3

Along with the unlimited use and Tech Heads support, there are some other fairly useful extras on offer. You can add up to 13 static IP addresses for an additional monthly fee. If you have roving staff, they can get unlimited access to over five million BT wi-fi hotspots across the UK, which is perfect for keeping data costs down and means you can conduct your meetings from franchised coffee shops.

You can purchase this Infinity package with unlimited UK calls or without calls – it's your choice. There are a number of extras you can add to your plan including caller display and call barring, which can all be bought in a money-saving bundle.

For those whose are concerned about security, there is the option to add a PC Security package to your order. Powered by McAfee, this software is easy to install and will protect your computer against spyware and viruses and give you a bit of peace of mind.

You'll also get a licence for Microsoft Office 365 Small Business. You'll be able to collaborate with colleagues no matter where you are by accessing documents and emails stored online. You can use this on several devices including your computer, tablet, laptop and smartphone.

Value for money

Rating

3

For 76Mbps fibre optic broadband, BT’s price seems like quite an attractive proposition, but there are always extra charges to take into consideration. You may be charged up to £120 to get a new phone line installed at your property. There's also a delivery charge for your BT Hub 5 and an additional cost if you want to upgrade your call plan.

The package is available on both 12-month and 24-month contracts. Although the 12-month contract offers you more flexibility, the 24-month one is cheaper. The overall price of this package can ramp up in cost quite quickly once you start adding in the one-off costs and additional features.

Equipment & installation

Rating

3

BT will supply you with the BT Hub 5, a wireless router, free of charge when you buy this package, though you will be charged £8 for postage. The Hub is sufficient to deliver a strong, clear signal over a decent distance and allows you to establish a wi-fi hotspot for your customers to use if you have a customer-facing business. Cleverly, it will use a different channel to the one that connects your work devices for this, so everything’s kept secure.

It's worth noting that installation of a new line may cost upward of £100 whether BT fibre is in your building or not.

BT Business Router

Overall Rating

3.4

This is a top-end business broadband package that’s suitable for small companies with a medium to large broadband requirement. While the initial fee seems very good value, the additional expenditure required to make the package workable mounts up quickly.
