BT Broadband Unlimited for business review

Unlimited broadband is vital for companies that trade and communicate over the internet. This is the cheapest business broadband deal offered by BT that is unlimited, but what else does it have to offer?

With access to five static IPs, three levels of technical support and a choice of either 12- or 24-month contracts it certainly looks to be heading in the right direction, but will the additional charges and set-up fees sink this package before it’s even set sail?

Cable.co.uk overall rating

This is an adequate package that can be highly customised and tailored to your needs. The base rate looks like excellent value but the costs can escalate quickly as you add on extras and include installation charges. However, it’s still good value for businesses with light to medium internet needs.

Speed & usage

This is a standard broadband package, so it comes with a standard broadband speed of 17Mbps. This speed should be suitable for small businesses with low to medium internet usage, but there will be a noticeable slowdown if you need to download large files or stream any content. The package also comes with a fairly unsubstantial 1Mbps upload speed, which is probably a more pressing issue for companies that send large files or use VoIP services, such as Skype, to communicate.

The good news here is that this package is unlimited, so you don’t have the presence of a data cap looming over your online actions. There is a traffic management policy in operation on this package that will slow your connection if BT feels you’re file sharing too much. However, this is probably not going to bother companies too much as it operates outside most office hours.

Technical support

Peace of mind is worth its weight in gold, especially where your business is concerned. BT offers three major levels of technical support and protection on this package, so you’ll be well covered for most eventualities. First, you receive access to BT Prompt Care, which is a free 24/7 helpdesk and technical centre that aims to fix any faults you’re having by the end of the next working day (crediting your account £25 if it fails to do so). You can upgrade to the Total Care package for an additional charge, this promises to fix your issues within 24 hours.

For another small additional fee, you can cover your computer with BT PC Security. This McAfee-powered security software will give you antivirus protection, anti-spyware protection, a firewall against online threats and a range of other shields. One subscription costs £4.99 per month (ex VAT), lasts a year and covers one PC. This can get quite expensive if you want a number of PCs covered and the software will slow down older PCs, so that’s something to bear in mind.

If you are thinking of running your own e-mail client, your own website, or want to access your computer from anywhere on the globe, you’ll need a static IP address. BT offers one static IP for a monthly charge of £5.50 (ex VAT), five for £8.50 (ex VAT) or 13 for £15.50. You also get access to 10 email addresses and usage of BT’s five million UK Wi-Fi hotspots – which is handy if you’re out and about a lot.

If you are having BT installed for the first time you will pay line rental (and an installation fee) that gives you 500 UK landline minutes and a capped rate once you’ve talked through your allowance. This can be upgraded to the Business Complete Call Package, which is £12.50 a month and gives you 5000 minutes to UK and international landlines, plus 500 minutes to UK mobiles. BT offers a number of extras that most businesses should appreciate, but the cost of taking them does rack up fairly quickly.

Value for money

The price BT shouts about for this package can be quite misleading. There are a number of additional costs to consider and prices vary, depending on the location of your business and which contract you want. Ultimately, the final monthly cost, and the set-up fee, may well be much higher than you envisaged.

Phone line installation costs either £110 or £125 (depending on contract), the Business Hub 3 wireless router is free, but the Business Hub 5 costs £70 and both include an £8 delivery charge. Line rental is £19. There are also a number of additional features, such as call features and static IP addresses that have a monthly charge, so the initial low price is almost guaranteed to rise.

Equipment & installation

The BT Business Hub 3 is provided with your package. If you already have a router capable of delivering your wireless signal you can choose to use this and save a bit of expense. The Business Hub 3 is an efficient and reliable router that, thanks to the 10/100/1000Mbit ethernet ports, is more than capable of supporting a number of computers and devices. There is the option of upgrading your BT router to the Business Hub 5, which provides a stronger connection than the Hub 3, for an additional £70.

The router uses wireless-N technology so it gives a clean, far-reaching signal enabling wireless devices to be connected at a higher speed with less dropout than other routers. It is also smart enough to go into power-saving mode whenever it’s not being used, saving on your electricity bill. There is an installation charge of either £110 or £125 depending on which contract you’re on, and an engineer visit can be organised when you make your initial order.

Overall Rating

This is a middle-of-the-road broadband package that offers good value for most small to medium businesses. It is unlimited, which is great, and comes with all the necessary extras a business could need, like static IPs and technical support. Just keep an eye on the additional costs as they pile up on your monthly bill.
