Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.4

BT unlimited broadband has no usage caps or limits. It’s not the cheapest unlimited package on the market, but does come with several extras, including parental controls and BT Sport 1 for free. Fibre is faster, but standard broadband is more widely available.

Speed & usage

Rating

3

BT Broadband unlimited is not the fastest way to get the internet into your home, simply because it's a standard broadband package and not a fibre service, like BT Infinity. It has advertised download speeds of up to 17Mbps, which is some way behind the Infinity speeds of up to 38Mbps and up to 76Mbps. At this speed you should be able to browse the internet, share images and files, and even stream standard definition TV. However, it will start to struggle when you want to download and stream a large amount of HD and Ultra HD content, or support a number of wi-fi-enabled devices at once.

Where unlimited broadband comes into its own is that it is not hamstrung with a usage limit, so you’re free to download as much as you want without the worry of crashing into your usage limit, and incurring excess charges.

Call plan

Rating

3

This package comes with a weekends call plan as standard, which you can upgrade to include anytime calls, allowing you to call most numbers free of charge at any time. Line rental is included in the monthly price. These plans can be augmented further with additional features and add-ons, which makes calls to mobiles and international numbers cheaper.

Extras

Rating

5

BT has pushed the boat out a bit when it comes to luring prospective customers with its wealth of extras. For all the sports fans out there, BT broadband and BT Infinity packages come complete with access to the BT Sport app and online player, which means you can watch all the action on your phone, tablet or laptop.

Other additions include BT SmartTalk, which lets you make cheap calls on your mobile, and BT Parental Controls, which protect your family from harmful websites. You also get access to millions of wi-fi hotspots around the UK and even 100GB of space on the BT Cloud.

There’s also the option to add a SIM-only mobile plan to your broadband package. BT re-entered the mobile market recently with the offer of three SIM-only plans, with various bundles of calls, texts and data. BT Mobile uses the EE network, which offers widespread 3G and 4G coverage. Prices start from £5 per month on a 12-month contract.

Gauging whether you think the unlimited broadband package is good value for money really comes down to how much you think you will benefit from the extras rather than just focusing on speed and usage. If you are interested purely in speed and usage, there are cheaper ways to receive unlimited broadband.

However, if you feel you will benefit from the raft of extras – access to the BT Sport app and unlimited public wi-fi being the standouts – then this deal offers superb value for money. The table below will show you how the unlimited broadband deal compares to some other BT deals.

The BT Home Hub 4 wireless router is included in the unlimited broadband deal. This sleek-looking little box of tricks will help you spread your broadband signal to all your wi-fi enabled devices and is quick and easy to set up.

Installation is free and painless when you sign up online, but you will have to pay a £9.99 delivery charge to get the Home Hub delivered to you and, quite brilliantly, it has been designed to slip through your post box, so you don’t have to be in when it gets delivered.

The best part of the unlimited broadband package is that it’s unlimited, so you don’t have to worry about usage limits, along with the wealth of extras that come with it. If you can find a use for these extras and don’t mind not having the fastest broadband speed in the world, then this deal could be perfect for you.

If the extras are not up your street and you’re after something with a little bit more pace, then it’s quite possible that you can find a cheaper, more suitable deal elsewhere. If you need to compare broadband choices, you can follow the link below to help you make up your mind.
