Unlimited BT Infinity 2 review

Wednesday, November 4th 2015

Unlimited BT Infinity 2 is a premium broadband service, both in terms of speed and price. Its top download speed is 76Mbps – fast enough for a dozen people to be online on the same connection at once. There’s no usage limit either, so you don’t need to worry about receiving excess usage charges.

So you may be wondering: is Unlimited BT Infinity 2 right for me? To help you choose, here is everything you could ever want to know about the Unlimited BT Infinity 2 package, from the speeds and equipment, through to any hidden installation costs.

Cable.co.uk overall rating
3.8

This package is the fastest fibre broadband option from BT with a decent 76Mbps download speed. On top of that, the truly unlimited usage limit, 19Mbps upload speed, lack of traffic management, and several extras – including one of the best routers on the market – make this a tempting and reliable fibre broadband package. Drawbacks include basic call plan (weekend calls as standard), high monthly price, and fairly limited availability throughout the UK. But if you want the best BT has to offer, this is as good as it gets.

Speed & usage

Rating

4

Speed is often the most important factor for fibre broadband. After all, the high download speed is what you’re paying for. At up to 76Mbps, the BT Infinity 2 speed doesn’t disappoint. It’s not the fastest broadband speed around (Virgin Media's two Vivid services offering up to 100Mbps and 200Mbps currently take that crown), but it matches the fastest packages from Sky, TalkTalk and other broadband providers.

Actual speeds, as researched by Ofcom, give a more accurate picture of what to expect. Ofcom’s latest broadband report gives the average download speed for BT Infinity 2 as between 57.4Mbps and 61.1Mbps during the day, and between 56.9Mbps and 60.5Mbps during peak hours. This is fairly close to the advertised speed.

The upload speed of up to 19Mbps is one of the highest around. It’s an ideal speed for sharing photos, videos, and bits and pieces with friends over the net.

Unlimited BT Infinity 2 has no usage cap or traffic management on downloads or uploads. This means your internet activity won’t be artificially slowed due to heavy downloading or the use of peer-to-peer software.

Call plan

Rating

3

The Unlimited BT Infinity 2 package comes with a weekend calls plan included as standard. This lets you call UK landlines and 0845 and 0870 numbers from midnight Friday through to midnight Sunday entirely for free. There is a small catch however. Any call you make during this period can only last 60 minutes. A minute longer, and you have to pay standard rates. You can easily circumvent this restriction by hanging up and redialling before the first 60 minutes are up.

You can upgrade this call plan to either Unlimited Evening and Weekend Calls or Unlimited Anytime Calls at an extra cost. The Unlimited Anytime Calls plan lets you ring UK landlines for free any day of the week, but it also has another small bonus. Any call you make to a UK mobile will be half the standard BT price – just 6.41p per minute.

Line rental is now included in the price of all BT broadband and fibre packages, meaning there is no additional expense to factor in.

Extras

Rating

5

BT Infinity broadband is the boss when it comes to extras. Bonus features include: BT NetProtect Plus, BT SmartTalk, BT Parental Controls, access to BT wi-fi hotspots, 500GB of cloud storage space, and free access to BT Sport 1. That’s quite a few cherries on the Infinity broadband cake.

BT has also re-entered the mobile market recently with three good value, SIM-only deals. They’re available to everyone, but BT broadband customers get a particularly good deal, with bundles of calls, texts and data from £5 per month.

Free access to BT Sport 1 will benefit any sport lovers looking for a broadband package. If you want the whole BT Sport experience you need to either join BT TV, or pay £0 per month to get it. The BT Sport pack contains BT Sport 1 and 2, BT Sport Europe, and ESPN. To watch BT Sport without BT TV you have to download the BT online player.

BT has millions of wi-fi hotspots around the UK. By joining Unlimited BT Infinity 2, you get access to all of them for free. If you’re in a coffee shop with a BT Hotspot nearby, you can quickly log in to the internet using your BT account details.

The 500GB of cloud storage space gives you extra peace of mind for storing those important photos and files. Whatever you store on the BT cloud servers can be accessed from any online device (assuming you have the correct log-in details).

The Unlimited BT Infinity 2 package requires a minimum sign-up of 12 months. This is shorter than most fibre broadband contracts, and means you can jump ship after a year if you'd like to leave.

The monthly BT Infinity price isn’t anything special, in fact it is pretty high unless there are any special deals running. However, the addition of extras, such as free access to BT Sport 1, pushes this package slightly ahead of competitors in terms of value for money. The lack of traffic management and usage caps is another bonus worth considering.

Line rental is included in the monthly cost of BT Infinity, which is why prices appear to be much higher than previously.

The BT Smart Hub comes with Unlimited BT Infinity 2. While technically free, you’ll still have to pay £9.99 for delivery, but the router is designed to fit snugly through your letterbox, so you wont have to wait in for it.

The Smart Hub is one of the better routers bundled with a fibre broadband package, easily trumping the older Home Hub 4. It features four 10/100/1000 Mbps GigE LAN ports for wired connections and boasts a strong dual-band wireless system for wi-fi connections.

BT Infinity 2 installation is £20, much cheaper than the £50 you need to fork out for BT Infinity 1. However, if you need a new landline installed, you may have to pay for an engineer to come out and work their magic.

Overall Rating

3.8

If you’re after a strong fibre broadband package, Unlimited BT Infinity 2 will tick a lot of boxes. The up to 76Mbps speed is fast enough for the majority of heavy users, and the unlimited data cap means you can download without worrying about extra charges or being slowed down. The addition of a considerable number of extras just sweetens the deal.

It’s not the fastest broadband package in town, and the monthly price may be a bit too high for some customers.
