Who is Cable.co.uk?

Cable.co.uk is a telecoms advice group committed to providing independent, up-to-date and consumer-friendly information to help you make the right choice for your business. Our comparison tools are approved by UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, which means your interests lie at the heart of what we do.

We hold ourselves up to high standards of accuracy and transparency in the telecoms industry, and always give our honest opinion. We pride ourselves on digging deep into the small print of broadband and phone providers, and evaluating each service from the user’s point of view.

How we write reviews

We know that a reliable and affordable internet connection is the lifeblood of many businesses, so we review every service to help you make an informed decision. We’re not afraid to criticise providers when their services fall short or praise them when they offer something special, so you can trust our scoring and have confidence in our recommendations.

We rate each element on how well it compares to rival services on the UK market, with a combination of these scores making up the overall score. We’ll always give you alternative suggestions too, so you can compare other options before making your final decision.

How we measure speed

Steady broadband speed is vital to many companies, particularly online businesses, so upload and download speeds form a major part of our reviews. You’ll notice that speeds are usually advertised ‘up to’ a certain figure and this is because there’s almost always a disparity between what providers offer and what they actually deliver.

To help you understand what kind of online activities each service will allow you to do, each broadband review includes a speed-o-meter graphic. This demonstrates the advertised and actual speeds you can expect from the package, so you can see if it will suit your requirements.

What our broadband speed-o-meter means

White needle

This measures what you can do with the advertised ‘up to’ speed of the package in question.

Black needle

This measures what you can do with the average speed of the package. This speed is measured by Ofcom.

Stream UHD TV & movies

Only achievable for the faster fibre optic speeds.

Stream HD TV & movies

Might prove difficult for ADSL broadband and just on the cusp for low level fibre optic.

Stream SD TV & movies

Should be achievable with a good connection from a standard ADSL broadband package.

Video calls

Still a low level activity that should be achievable from the majority of broadband.

Stream radio or music

Low-level internet usage. Even very slow internet connections should let you do this.

E-mail, internet, social media

Almost the bare minimum for broadband, every package should at least achieve this.
