Cable.co.uk overall rating
2.5

Direct Save Telecom offers a good package at a low price, complete with unlimited usage, that is ideal for those on a budget. However, with a maximum speed of 17Mbps on offer, if you do a lot of downloading and streaming, it may be worth considering a fibre package instead.

Speed & usage

Rating

3

With a download speed of up to 17Mbps, Direct Save Telecom’s standard broadband package doesn’t stand out against other providers at this level, but it is nevertheless a capable connection for the average user. Unfortunately, there’s no data from Ofcom available on the the average actual speeds received by Direct Save Telecom customers, so there’s no knowing whether you are likely to get anything near the advertised rate.

The upload speed of up to 1Mbps will let you browse and share pictures on social networks, like Facebook and Twitter. It may take a little while to transfer, but it does the job.

Direct Save Telecom previously operated a traffic management policy that restricted the speeds of certain activities at peak times. This has now been lifted, which is good news for everybody, especially active downloaders, file sharers and those who enjoy video streaming.

On top of this, usage is totally unlimited, which means you’re free to download as much as you like every month. This is especially handy for families and frequent internet users that stream media or download files on a regular basis.

Call plan

Rating

3

Direct Save Telecom Unlimited broadband comes with free evening calls after 7pm and weekend calls to UK landlines for £1.25 per month. You can make calls free of charge, for up to 60 minutes. A standard rate of 8.5p per minute applies thereafter, which is actually cheaper than BT. These include 01, 02, 030, 0330, 0845 and 0870 numbers only. Just remember to hang up and redial before the 60 minutes are up to avoid any extra charges. Call features are also available, such as call barring and call waiting, at an additional cost.

DST broadband comes with line rental included in the monthly price, so there is nothing extra to pay on top. Direct Save uses the BT Openreach network to provide its broadband services so there is no escape from line rental.

Extras

Rating

1

Direct Save Telecom does not really offer a lot of extras, as is to be expected with a budget provider.

However, you do get a Direct Save discount card, enabling you to save money at various retail stores, including Superdry, Tesco, Amazon, Debenhams, House of Fraser and Matalan. Plus, you can get a 55% discount on family attractions, including Disneyland, Legoland, Alton Towers and Warwick Castle. But that’s not all; you can save money on laser eye surgery, car rentals, mobile phones and private medical care, among many other things. The Direct Save Telecom website has a full listing of where you can use the card.

Unlimited broadband from Direct Save Telecom comes on a 24-month contract and starts at £19.95 per month including line rental. There’s an upfront set-up fee of £24.95 plus £8.95 to deliver your free wireless router. While the monthly price is hard to beat, make sure you read the terms and conditions thoroughly before purchasing. If you find that you aren’t happy with the service and want to leave, you will have to pay cancellation fees.

If you’re after more flexibility, Direct Save Telecom also offers unlimited broadband without a contract. The maximum download speed is the same (up to 17Mbps) as is the cost of line rental (various call plans are available). However, the monthly cost for broadband is higher. At £33.90 per month, you’re paying for the freedom to cancel whenever you want as the package operates on a 28-day rolling agreement. If you don’t need unlimited usage, there’s a cheaper option with a 20GB download limit, which might suit the occasional internet user. Set-up is free for these non-contract packages, but the overall costs may outweigh their flexibility in the long term. You can compare all of the plans that are on offer below.

Direct Save Telecom broadband comes with a TP-Link TD-W8968 wireless router. It allows you to connect several devices – including smartphones, tablets and laptops – to the router. The router also comes with four ethernet ports for wired connections and a USB port for storage and file sharing. Its design may not be as slick as some models offered by other providers, but it does the job at an affordable price.

There’s an £8.95 charge for postage and packaging – which also includes insurance for the router – plus a set-up fee of £24.95. Reassuringly, the customer service helpline runs 24/7.

Overall Rating

2.5

With Direct Save Telecom Unlimited broadband, you get what you pay for. The price will attract those after a basic, budget broadband deal, and the Direct Save discount card is a bonus. However, for households that stream and download frequently, the speed may be insufficient.
