EE broadband reviews

EE is best known as a mobile phone network and the pioneer of 4G, but it also offers a range of unlimited home broadband plans. Prices are competitive and many plans have welcome discounts for the first six or 12 months.

EE offers a nice collection of perks and an award-winning router with its fibre packages, and the speeds are on a level with the big market players. The customer service reputation is a little tarnished however, so the low price may be reflected in a lack of help when you need it.

About EE broadband

EE is a relative newbie in the telecoms market, formed by the merger of T-Mobile and Orange in 2010. It entered the home broadband arena in 2012 and now offers a range of standard and fibre broadband with home phone packages. EE’s broadband services are available to everyone; however, you can’t take EE TV on its own without EE broadband and phone.

EE home broadband comes bundled with a landline and home phone plan. Weekend landline calls are included free as standard or you can pay extra to get anytime and mobile calls. EE’s mobile broadband plans meanwhile, are ideal if you want to get online on the go, with the choice of 4G tablet SIMs, dongles and mobile wi-fi units with data limits up to 50GB.

Existing mobile and broadband customers can also get EE TV, a set-top box and content-streaming device for the home. It has 1TB of memory for content storage and the ability to ‘flick’ video from your mobile to your television. It includes 70 Freeview channels, plus some catch up TV players and online apps.

EE uses the BT Openreach network to deliver broadband and telephone services, which means availability is pretty much on a par with BT: widespread for standard broadband and currently limited to around 60% for fibre broadband. You can find out which EE services are available in your area using the postcode checker below.

EE broadband packages come with three download speeds. These are 17Mbps for standard broadband, and 38Mbps and 76Mbps for EE fibre broadband. The top-level speed is ideal for a wide variety of internet activities, including gaming, video calling, streaming HD video and movies, and multiple users sharing a single connection.

EE operates a traffic management policy to control network congestion at peak times, but a nice perk for gamers is that all online gaming activity is given priority status so your enjoyment won’t be affected.

EE broadband includes free Norton 360 security software for 12 months and EE Film Club which lets you rent films for £1 between Monday and Wednesday each week. The former ‘Orange Wednesdays’ perk of two-for-one cinema tickets and Pizza Express meals every Wednesday ended in February 2015.

The award-winning Bright Box router

A Bright Box router is supplied with all broadband services, which is exclusive to EE and operates with wireless N technology. The fibre version – Bright Box 2 – has won industry awards for ease of use, simple set-up and overall performance, so it more than delivers for speed and extensive wi-fi coverage in your home.

Free unlimited wi-fi in London Underground stations

EE customers in the capital can enjoy unlimited free wi-fi in London Underground stations through a partnership with EE and Virgin Media. wi-fi is available in 137 stations, including ticket halls, walkways and platforms, but not in tunnels or between stations.
