Gigaclear broadband reviews

Gigaclear was founded in 2010 and aims to bring fast fibre-to-the-home broadband to rural communities. For those out of the mainstream broadband loop, Gigaclear is a godsend, supplying high speed broadband of up to 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) that will be the envy of normal broadband customers everywhere.

But it’s not without its limitations. Availability is restricted to rural locations with at least 400 properties that are within 3km of a UK fibre broadband provider. However, if you can get it, Gigaclear will transform your online experience.

About Gigaclear broadband

Gigaclear is a rural broadband provider located in the UK and currently operational in a dozen rural towns. It relies on fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology, meaning broadband installation takes longer than it does with traditional broadband providers, but results in far faster download and upload rates.

It’s a community-focused provider – requiring at least 30% of an interested community to sign up in order to roll out to customers. Once the cables are in place, you can either install it yourself, or arrange for either a Gigaclear Boxcom engineer (the provider's approved installer) or a local tradesman to do it for you.

Gigaclear can be bundled with Vonage for cheap calls

Gigaclear comes alone as standard with no home phone features. However it can be bundled with Vonage, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) service that provides cheap calls to UK landlines through your broadband connection. Gigaclear doesn’t offer a television or mobile service.

The process of getting Gigaclear is entirely different from how you get broadband from any other provider. You have to register your interest at the Gigaclear website, along with others in your local community.

The ‘Giga’ in Gigaclear refers to the download and upload speeds available on the provider’s fibre-to-the-home network. At 1,000Mbps (1Gbps), it’s faster than almost any other broadband provider in the UK.

The amount of online activities you can do at once with Gigaclear is astounding. On a 1Gbps connection, you could stream 100 high definition movies at the same time, or download a 40MB music album instantaneously. Slower packages are available if you feel 1Gbps is excessive. These include 50Mbps, 100Mbps, and 200Mbps.

Upload files, videos and photos faster than ever before

Gigaclear’s broadband speeds are symmetric. This means that if you have a download speed of 1Gbps, your upload speed will be the same, so you can upload files and content to the internet faster than ever before. With a 1Gbps upload speed you could comfortably upload 1000 photos to Facebook in under five minutes.

There aren’t many extras with Gigaclear’s broadband packages. For those in rural areas, simply being able to get online will mean more than any additional features, such as anti-virus protection and free apps.

However, there is the option to add a static IP address for just £2 per month – useful if you want to be able to control online services such as file servers and home CCTV networks from a remote location. You can also add parental control software to manually control what your kids can access while browsing the web.

No line rental fees

One of the best benefits of Gigaclear broadband (apart from its speed) is the complete absence of line rental fees. These are a common bugbear of home broadband plans, putting an extra £15 on average on top of your monthly bill. Even if you add Vonage – the VoIP phone plan – to your Gigaclear package, you won’t have to pay line rental.
