Gigaclear business broadband

Gigaclear installs specialist fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband with speeds of up to 10Gbps for rural businesses. This offers a welcome solution for firms that battle frustratingly slow connections and who are excluded from the fibre rollouts of the likes of BT and Virgin Media.

Rural connectivity and incredible speed are Gigaclear’s unique selling points, but high cost and restricted availability are two major drawbacks. For the cheapest option, Gigaclear requires communities to have a minimum of 400 properties before it will consider fibre installation, and 30% of them need to sign up. These in-depth reviews will help you decide whether Gigaclear could be the business broadband solution you need.

About Gigaclear business broadband

Gigaclear provides two types of unlimited fibre broadband for rural businesses and both are available to firms of all sizes, with a choice of several different speeds. The Gigaclear Business services have a minimum sign-up requirement to cover the cost of laying the cables and ensure there is demand within the local area.

The Gigaclear Enterprise services have fewer restrictions, as they are based on dedicated leased lines installed on request, although there still needs to be a pre-existing Gigaclear connection nearby. Business packages are fairly reasonably priced and start from £59 per month, whereas the Enterprise leased lines are very expensive and packages start from £290 per month for 50Mbps increasing to £19,900 per month for 10Gbps.

Technical support

You would expect fantastic technical support with such steep prices and Gigaclear is pretty good. The 10Gbps Enterprise package features 24-hour support and on-site maintenance within four hours, and the standard support for the Business packages is access to a helpdesk from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, with an engineer visit guaranteed within three working days.

Gigaclear doesn’t offer much in the way of security software however, so you’ll need to take out a separate service to protect against malware and security threats, although the modem does come with a firewall.

Gigaclear operates a unique business model and installs FTTP broadband in rural communities on a case-by-case basis. If it has been installed in your area already, you will be able to join and have cables laid to your property, otherwise you’ll need to get together with your neighbours to apply for it as a community. You can find out if is available in your area on the Gigaclear website: www.gigaclear.com

Speed is the biggest draw of Gigaclear business broadband. By installing fibre optic cables directly into properties, Gigaclear is able to offer unbelievably fast internet connections ranging from 50Mbps to 10Gbps (1,000Mbps). When you consider that the UK average broadband speed is 17.8Mbps (according to Ofcom) and many people in rural locations are lucky to get above 1Mbps, you can appreciate just how fast Gigaclear’s services are.

Whether you actually need this level of speed is another issue entirely, but it will certainly future-proof your business for whatever technological advancements lie ahead. Further advantages are that the speeds are two-way (known as symmetric) so uploads are just as fast as downloads, and the FTTP method means that the speed you pay for is the speed you get.

Gigaclear offers one free static IP as standard, with the option to add eight more for £15 per month. Many businesses will find these useful, particularly if you run your own website server, secure virtual private network (VPN) or CCTV system to keep your business secure.

Gigaclear is a broadband-only provider so a phone line isn’t automatically included, which saves on the cost of line rental. If you do require a phone line, you can subscribe to Vonage – a Voice over Internet Protocol service – to make and receive calls over the internet. Vonage business call plans start from £7 per month for unlimited UK landline calls.

A free connection and installation kit is included, featuring a 1Gbps Wireless-n router with four Ethernet ports. You can install the fibre and router yourself or you can use a local engineer. Alternatively, you can call an engineer from Boxcom, Gigaclear’s approved installer, and pay for professional installation.
