Speed & usage

Gigaclear Business broadband comes with an option of five download speeds: up to 50Mbps, up to 100Mbps, up to 250Mbps, up to 500Mbps and up to 1000Mbps. These are ideal for small- to medium-sized businesses wanting to connect several devices and computers to the internet. Some larger businesses might find this is not enough, and require extra bandwidth as well as speed, in which case it may be worth considering a Gigaclear Enterprise package.

Gigaclear provides a symmetric service, meaning the download and upload speeds are the same. With the slowest speed of 50Mbps you can upload files in seconds – just imagine what you can do with 1000Mbps. These upload speeds are faster than many top-end providers, such as Virgin Media and Sky.

All Gigaclear broadband packages come with unlimited usage. There’s no traffic management or fair usage policy, so you’ll be able to download and upload as much as you like without any disruptions, even during busy working hours.

Technical support

Technical support is invaluable to any business and Gigaclear doesn’t disappoint, with its helpdesk available from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm and from 9am to 1pm on Saturday. You can also upgrade to 24/7 telephone support for £83.33 a month on any Gigaclear business plan.

With regards to maintenance, if you purchase Business 50 or Business 100 Unlimited broadband, it will take three working days to send out an engineer. If you purchase any of the higher speed packages, an engineer will be sent out the next working day. You can upgrade to next-day onsite maintenance from £41.67 a month on any plan or even to on-site maintenance within four hours for £166.67 per month. Eight-hour Guaranteed Fix is available for £250 a month.

As Gigaclear is a rural broadband provider, rather than a business provider, there isn’t much focus on security, although the modem does come with a firewall. If you want advanced security, you’ll have to install separate software. Gigaclear states in its terms and conditions that unless agreed under a separate contract, it is not responsible for the security of your networks and/or systems.

Gigaclear doesn’t offer many extras. The business broadband packages come with a free static IP address with the option to add eight IP addresses an additional fee. These are useful for running your own website server or setting up a secure virtual private network (VPN).

Gigaclear is essentially a broadband-only provider, so you won’t have to pay line rental. However, there is the option to add Vonage, a VoIP service, which offers you an online call plan. Business call plans start from £8 per month, which is cheaper than the average line rental cost, and comes with unlimited UK landline calls. There are also a number of free call features available with Vonage, including caller display and caller block. You can also receive your voicemails as sound files via email. This is particularly useful if you are always busy in the office.

Value for money

The broadband packages start from £52.25 to £445 per month. Although this may seem steep, when you take into consideration that Gigaclear doesn’t charge line rental and offers faster speeds than top-end providers, you are getting quite a competitive deal.

It’s worth nothing that if you want to upgrade your technical support, you will have to pay more. The business broadband packages come with a connection fee of £166.67 and a free router. There is the option to install the broadband yourself which is free of charge. Taking into account that you are getting fast broadband in a rural area, unlimited usage, and very high speeds, it presents great value for money.

Equipment & installation

Installation isn’t as straightforward with Gigaclear as it is with a standard broadband provider. This is due to the fact that Gigaclear broadband is supplied via the fibre-to-the-home infrastructure to ensure high broadband speeds. You may need to have parts of your property dug up so that the cables can be laid, but you will be notified beforehand.

You will receive your own connection and installation kit. The kit includes a 1Gbps Wireless-n router with four Ethernet ports. You can install the fibre and router yourself or you can use a local engineer. Alternatively you can call an engineer from Boxcom, Gigaclear’s approved installer. To request an engineer from Boxcom, it will cost a minimum of £95; it may cost more depending on how far your property is from the roadside.
