iD mobile reviews

Carphone Warehouse dreamt up iD mobile as a network that values the individuality of its customers.

It offers SIM-only plans, data-only plans and pay monthly plans with handsets, all of which are somewhat customisable. Plans are classed as ‘GoTo’, ‘ShockProof’, or ‘TakeAway’, and each has its own pros and cons. Is iD mobile the right provider for you? Here’s everything you need to find out…

About iD mobile

ID mobile doesn’t run its own network. Instead, it’s what’s known as an MVNO, or mobile virtual network operator. This means it uses another mobile provider’s network (in this case Three) to carry its calls, texts, and data.

Three varieties of SIM plans

When you order a SIM plan from iD mobile, either with a handset or as a SIM-only plan, you have to choose from one of three SIM ‘types’. These are: ‘ShockProof’, which comes with an automatic £5 cap on usage beyond the set allowances; ‘TakeAway’, which lets you roam for free in 22 countries; and ‘GoTo’, which is the basic 4G option.

No pay-as-you-go option

Unusually for a mobile operator, iD does not offer any pay-as-you-go options, but its SIM-only range is so vast there should be something to suit your requirements.

As iD mobile uses Three’s network, availability between the two is practically identical. Currently, Three covers around 97% of the UK population with its 3G service, and 91% of the UK population with its 4G service.

Ofcom doesn’t give any official information about the speed you can expect on either iD mobile’s 4G or 3G plans. Even iD itself doesn’t give an estimate of the speed you can expect.

Nevertheless, an indication can be gathered by a quick glance at the average speeds on the Three network. In the latest Ofcom report, Three was found to have an average 3G speed of 7Mbps and an average 4G speed of 17Mbps. Mobile internet speeds on iD mobile should be fairly similar.

Tethering isn’t allowed

You can stream with iD. You can download files. You can play online games. But you can’t tether. Tethering involves using your mobile’s internet connection to get online on other devices, like your laptop. It’s a big selling point for many, and its omission from iD mobile is worth noting.

Extras are rather thin on the ground with iD mobile. In fact it wouldn’t be much of a stretch to say that there aren’t any at all. The cap on the ‘ShockProof’ plan and the free roaming on the ‘TakeAway’ plans could be considered extras… But only at a stretch, seeing as they’re fundamental to those two offerings.

Get help from the Carphone Warehouse

As iD mobile is the brainchild of the Carphone Warehouse, you can take a wander into any of their shops for help and assistance with your iD plan. If you’re not a big fan of interacting with online communities to solve your mobile woes, being able to chat with a customer service representative face-to-face can be a strong selling point.
