About Lycamobile

Lycamobile launched in the UK in 2006 and now operates in 19 countries including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

Lycamobile specialises in international pay-as-you-go SIM cards to enable consumers to keep in touch within the UK, with friends and family abroad, and while travelling abroad. Lycamobile operates on the O2 network in the UK and has partnerships with operators in each country it serves.

Plans and payment options

All Lycamobile plans are pay-as-you-go, so they run on a contract-free basis, where you top up your free SIM card with credit and pick your preferred bundle. There is a huge range of call plans to choose from that include varying amounts of calls, texts and data. There are also country-specific bundles and data-only plans.

Bundles are valid for 30 days and providing there’s sufficient credit on your SIM, your bundle will automatically renew when it expires and the fee will be deducted from your balance. Lycamobile plans are available to everyone and don’t require a credit check.

Lycamobile piggybacks on the O2 network in the UK, which offers widespread coverage throughout the country. Although O2 offers 3G and 4G mobile broadband, the latter is much faster.

Lycamobile doesn’t publicise its own speeds for 3G and 4G mobile internet so we can only use O2’s services as a guide, which are measured by industry regulator Ofcom. Over a 12-month period, O2’s download speed averaged 5Mbps for 3G and 18Mbps for 4G. This compares to the industry averages of 6Mbps and 33Mbps for 3G and 4G respectively.

Lycamobile doesn’t offer extra perks in the traditional sense. For example, there’s no free Spotify subscription as with Vodafone, or Priority advance tickets with O2. However, there are a few useful features.

Transfer credit to friends and family overseas

Lycamobile’s airtime transfer service allows you to securely transfer mobile credit from your Lycamobile account to another account belonging to friends and family abroad.

10% NUS discount and no roaming charges

The provider also offers a range of cheap student mobile plans, with a 10% NUS discount on online top-ups. Finally there are no roaming charges when using your phone abroad in 18 countries.
